Hi from Jeff Berlin

Good morning! I am here wanting to talk bass and music if you are interested in doing so. I understand that some on Talkbass have a problem with what I say (or how I say it) I thought that if you want to ask questions, we can discusss bass and music. Cool?

Another great on the site....what a lucky forum this is....

Welcome Jeff, and thanks for offering your expertise.

Here's a quick question (though it may be regional, and thus unanswerable by you)...as and adult, I've been looking for a music program that I can get into, and really haven't found much. There are no colleges that offer night degree programs in music, and all the true music schools are geared towards children or 1-1 lessons only. I do well in a "forced" learning situation, as school is for me, and just can't find anything in the Philly area I'm looking for....any suggestions?

Thanks!!

Hi Jeff,

I'm very familiar with all your stuff with the Bruford band and thought your style matched his perfectly. The one question I've always wanted to ask you is -- when you subbed for Tony Levin in ABWH, how the hell did you play Heart of the Sunrise without a pick? That always amazed me.

One question pls:
How do you learn to and apply theory on your solos, it's quite complicated to me whenever i have to face with scales or modes.

Hi Jeff, can you explain the problems that "Dumbing down" music is having as you see it? You are a big advocate of learning music, not just learning bass which preformance school seem to want to do. What is so bad about what a preformance relates school offers? This is a few points in one question

EIGHT FINGERS? I use two. Actually one of the best classes I ever took in Junior High School was a mandatory typing class. I learned skills that I use today.

Your greetings to me are unbelievably generous. I didn't expect such a nice greeting and I truly thank you. I am here to help you if I can, and if you have a problem with me and what I say, if you ask me in a nice way, I will take you seriously and try my best to give you a sensible answer. OK?

Regarding the person in Philly, you live in the town that has one of the richest music communities in the country. I don't know intimately the schools or classes that are available to give you what you want in the Philadelphia area. I suggest that you seek out great jazz teachers or great jazz players to guide you to good music lessons because jazz requires a knowledge of music and a knowledge of instrument to play. This makes it an excellent academic music to learn even if you don't wish to play it professionally or just for fun.

Thanks, Jeff. Guess I'll start asking around...

Oh, and props to the typing classes....one of the best skills I never knew I'd need :P

Hello Jeff
If you want to know what people have said about you, Use the search feature (I have heard that alot around here).

Seriously, until I joined this forum, I had no idea who you were. I have seen a few clips on you tube and it's pretty obvious that you know your way around the instrument.

EDIT: I just did a quick search and it seems that alot of the opinions around here are that you have a big ego and you wank alot.

I don't know if I would necessarily call either one of those things bad if that's what the situation calls for.

I hope that you stick around, I'm sure you could teach us all a few things.

With your permission, I will answer questions rather to the point so that I can answer what I can. Cool?

I've always used my fingers as my plectrum and have learned to play pretty much anything required of me, which seems to include Heart of the Sunrise.

Lessons are not for application. They are for regard. You learn to play better when you improve as a player which means that you need to have knowledge and experience to play. Theory lesson are really hard to apply because the music you are playing may not be lined up for the lessons you are practicing. The trick is the practicing itself. The love of holding a bass and working on new musical information makes us into better players, and therefore better soloists, if this is your interest.
