HIP HOP BASS GROOVES

Sign in to disble this ad
You guys may give me a ton of s**t for saying this but sometimes I really dig old hip hop grooves. I know that most of the time their isn't even a real bass in the mix but I still love it. For example, DR. DRE's the Chronic album is full of insane beats. Please check it out before you judge. I ussually listen to groove bands like MMW or Charlie Hunter and stuff like that. Does anyoine else think that some (obviously not all) hip hop beats are cool. I often find myself in my basement jammin along with them.

Hip Hop basslines are basically R&B basslines. Just rapping instead of singing on top.

tbh, i only dig a handful of hiphop basslines, and those are only basslines of the earlier days of hiphop. the basslines nowadays seem so uninspired and repetitive. but then again, i think the "clap" is way overused in todays songs.

IMHO Some hip hop beats are cool even though I'm not a hip hop fan perse'. It's a generational thing for me. I just gave my son a crate of old 70's R&B LP's and he went nuts. He loves'em. He sampled a Denise Williams cut added some drums and had a friend put a rap on it and it sounded pretty nice. Dr. Dre is also a fan of 70's R&B and used a lot samples from that era.

You should check out MC divinity (Beyonce's bass player), I'm a big fan of hers. She does some cool solo hip hop bass playing and rapping.

A good grove is a good groove, even if they are often lessened by asinine rapping on top. Off the top of my head, Ton Loc's "Cheeba Cheeba" comes to mind. I wonder who played bass on that track?

How come no one's mentioned Flea's bass line in Young MC's "Bust a Move"? A good example of a non-pfunk sampled line.

That's a good example, and as a plus, the lyrics don't make me

Cyrpess Hill and Wu Tang are as big an influence on me as Geezer and Frank Bello are. I don't care for most of today's rappers, their tracks lack a little musical substance. Give me The Roots, Jurassic 5, Tribe Called Quest, hell, I'll take The Ghetto Boys over the stuff that plays in clubs now.

(Nerdy side note) I recently found a compilation called "Shaolin Soul". It's all of the original songs that Wu-Tang sampled for the 36 Chambers album. Good stuff!

i dig the bass line in skee-lo's "i wish". remember that song?

and wu-tang, and older snoop and dre, nwa, lots of older rap, for newer stuff it's like... mr. lif, aesop rock, mc chris, a local dude called el-a-kwentz and his cohorts. used to go to this semi-political rap show every friday at this bar.

i like body count quite a bit, and i personally regard that as rap music even though it's a metal/rock sounding band.

thers this 3 or 4 note bass break on an old hip hop track " Let me clear my throat"

To me that sums up hip hop bass lines, incredibly simple, but its like a james brown track, theres that tension when the bass disappears, you want it back.

check wefunkradio for some cool rnb and hip hop basslines
