Holy moly! Discovering Michael Manring...

Who says you can't slap a fretless? Check out this Manring vid. Probably nothing new for his fans, but for anyone who hasn't heard of him, the guy's off the hook.

Or if you want something more melodic, this is just gorgeous:

Thank you youtube! (And uh ... oh, yeah: thanks Mike.)

I heard Thonk when it came out in the early 90's. Completely made me change my perception of reality. I had always thought I could lead a band, not just peddle the E behind the guitards. Of course I don't have his talent but, none the less he solidifies the idea! Check out his forum on this website, under ask the pro's, he will answer your questions.

Enjoy the exploration.

Thonk is the the most innovative, creative, and beautiful bass solo album ever recorded.

As much as I like these guys, nothing Jaco, Billy, Victor, Stu, Stanley or Marcus do will ever touch it.

Ain't that the truth. Michael has been pushing the boundries of bass for quite a few years. Just a phenominally talented musician. And to top it off he is one of the most genuinely nicest person around and crazy humble to boot.

He travels what seems like everywhere in the world to play. Unfortunately everytime he comes up to the Portland, OR area I can't make it to see him. I'd like to see and hear him play in person but more than that just get a chance to meet him.

He's a good guy.

Michael was selling surplus copies of Thonk that had been discovered in a warehouse after the CD went out of print. I ordered a copy and sent him a note asking him to come to Maryland to play and said something about how much I enjoyed his playing etc. He sent the CD back signed and included a brief note thanking me for the words and promised to make it back to MD. I think he actually did play Maryland a few years later but I no longer lived there. Anyhow, it's rare to have that type of exchange these days.

And I still haven't seen him live

Amazing that THONK could ever go out of print or legal download.

Michael Manring

I've seen him twice, once at a once-in-a-lifetime clinic with all of 15 other people, mostly bassists in Seattle a couple years back.
He's definitely in another universe in terms of what he does and how he does it.
However, I personally can't listen to him for very long...I think of him as the bass equivalent of Michael Hedges..the 2 of them used to work together before Michael H passed away..

incredibly talented, incredibly proficient, but he is so far into the musical ozone layer that I just get lost and I long to hear simple hooks and riffs...guess that's my limitation!

Exactly! Michael Hedges was so incredible. Such a shame too.

Micheal Manring can go off in unbelieveable directions. But if you get an opportunity to listen to the artists that he plays bass with he can hold the bottom like crazy. He can certainly play the supportive role. He is just a monster player.

Yes, Michael Manring is truly one of the bass's extreme talents. Note: a great mood CD is his collaboration with David Cullen - Groovemasters Vol. 5: Soliloquy.
