Hoppus?

Sign in to disble this ad
Can anyone tell me why Hoppus is so widely disliked? I have seen many many people rip him for his 'basic' or 'rubbish' bass lines. I was wondering why so many people dislike him so?

IMO, he did what was necessary for the music he played - simple, driving, and serving the song. I mean if he wrote a hyperactive, all over the place Geddy-style line, he would completely ruin and defat the purpose of the songs, would he not?

Opinions?

I never heard of the guy until I bought his signature bass. I'm still not a Blink182 fan, but I dig his signature axe a lot! The guy gets paid to play bass in front of thousands of people. He's livin the dream, gotta give him his props.

He's a pretty basic player, I don't take too much issue with him because he spends a fair amount of time singing too. But you can be more complex than he is in the pop-punk genre; just listen to some Mike Dirnt lines.

Naturally, not the best quality, but he's got some interesting stuff going on.

Yeah, it seems kinda funny that one artist will be given props for doing simple thumpy basslines that are in the pocket. Then another gets ripped for doing the same and he is tagged as a bass player that plays lines that are too simple. I don't get it either...

Because that's what people on the internet do, they critique everything and everyone, especially rich and famous people.

There's nothing quite like bashing someone for every aspect of their succesful life to feel good about yourself, especialy when your in the basement of your parents with no life or friends.

Those damn succesful people... they should all die

Wow, it's been a long time since a Hoppus Hate thread.

Guess he's got to get added to the list again.

I don't think anyone actually got around to bashing him in this particular thread.

That's cool, but Mark Hoppus is the bassist of Blink182 or maybe you were being sarcastic?

If the bassline works for the sound, it's not wrong. If simple is what's needed, it's the right line for the tune.

Just because you could perform a complicated bass line doesn't mean you should.

He plays what is right, he is by no means a virtuoso but that is not what he is going for and some people completely miss the point of that.

Doesn't have to be him particularly, I was generalizing and pointing out the fact that some folks get railed for being simple and some folks are treated like gods for being simple. Some folks are praised for being highly technical and then another who plays the same way will be called to busy. There's no rhyme or reason to it.

Oh, there is. The less notes you play the more money one makes. Virtuosity can be a handicap to career $$$$$ as a bassist. 99% of commercial money making songs call for sticking to the grove, minimal bass playing or creating a good groove, not soloing or two handed tapping skills. Simple 4/4 bass.

Zappa was quoted saying Jazz = Poverty

From now on I'm only going to put the "G" string on my bass, it's the smallest and puts less strain on the neck and it's the cheapest. I figure I should be gagillionaire by next year! Ya know, now that I think about it, the bassist for The Presidents of the United States of America only had two strings on his bass.

He's a bass player who also sings.
If you like Blink 182. great.
He makes tons of money. ( I wish it where me)
I don't think his bass line are that hard, or complex.
But I do dig his sig, bass.
