i absolutely love the song dammit, but i've never heard another song of theirs that i would want to listen to a second time.

but he's a bass player, playing good basslines that support the song, what's the problem?

I don't know, some people just has to complain about stuff xDD

I think he's just fine where he is and for what he does, and people who bashes him are just jealous because they like to play 34534545 notes per second but nobody gives them any credit =D

Guilty as charged! Oh I'm also a scottish hockey fan that drinks a lot of ale. Maybe I'll start a thread for short, fat, bald, ugly, ale drinking scottish hockey fans that just happen to play bass so they can afford to buy a "G" string and some scotch!

well, what he sais is true, "more often than not", but that doesn't mean everybod is that way

I personaly hate Jaco in every aspect, but I like Blink, not that I love'em, but they're good enough for me to listen to their music x)

I wouldn't go as far as to say I hate Jaco, but I don't really enjoy listening to his music other than the occasional "Wow that guy had some chops" moment. Comparatively I would much rather listen to Blink than Jaco.

Additionally, being a huge fan of the radio program Loveline, specifically when Adam Carolla was the co-host: Did anyone hear any of the episodes with Blink, or the couple times that Mark Hoppus was on the show by himself? The guy is laid-back, funny, and quite charming. Those qualities don't necessarily lend themselves directly to the guy's playing, but when I know someone isn't a douche I tend to like their music more.

A lot of music that I enjoy listening to does absolutely nothing to inspire me to improve as a bassist.

A lot of the things that inspire me to improve as a bassist, I don't necessarily enjoy listening to.

Ain't life grand?

You're forgetting something guys. Yeah he plays simples lines but guess what. When you hear him playing you know its him. regardless of the band he's in. Having you're own voice is more important than how technical you are. He is very solid sounding too. Dont be fooled hes a good cat.

Id also like to add to the flamers. I love jamerson and old motown.

IMO, he did what was necessary for the music he played - simple, driving, and serving the song. I mean if he wrote a hyperactive, all over the place Geddy-style line, he would completely ruin and defat the purpose of the songs, would he not?

Opinions?
+1 he actually acted like a "bassist"

I'm sorry, but jaco was a wanker. I much prefer a bass player that plays for the song.

Yeah, so his bass playing is less than par, so what? As stated, he makes the money and does what's needed for his kinda music. I may have him as part of my influences, but it's more for the way he acts up on stage - having fun w/ everything that's going on with out a care in the world. Plus, at least he admits he can't play it good -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOfsr9D-KXU - 40 seconds into it

i dont really understand why he gets stick... there are many bassists that are playing similar line to mark hoppus but dont get the stick... blink 182 is simple pop punk music.. it should be taken for what it is... simple catchy pop songs that arent meant to be technical... he does what he does well and thats fine..

i dont even like blink 182 but i dont understand why this pop bassist gets more stick than any other pop bassist

Seems like most threads about him start as they dont think he is worthy of a signature bass!

I was gonna say the "he's name is robert paulson" thing too XDD

aaaaanyway, there is one thing I do not like about Mark Hoppus and it's that he seems to not care about improving, that kinda sucks, but I can't blame him xD

*Really* opening myself up here, but Blink 182 is one of my favorite bands of all time. Got the tattoo to prove it.

Having said that, my own playing probably leans further towards John Paul Jones and Geezer Butler, and I worship at the alter of James Jamerson. But if I'm cranking up the stereo I'm reaching for Blink before my Motown boxset. My music fandom in general is pretty far removed from my own musicianship.
