Sorry, not sure about blow by blow, but his first two feature ron wood on bass, and the playing is sweet!

'Wired' has been a big fave of mine... Wilbur Bascomb created some great grooves for JB.

Yeah, great stuff. Phil Chen's a bass player, while Ron Wood always sounds like a guitarist who doesn't quite "get" bass.

Phil Chen was featured in a recent BP article. I found it interesting that he doesn't read a lick of music and plays by ear....Not promoting this BTW. It's just that some have it and some don't

Great album that 'blew' me away the 1st time I heard it (the week it was released...in 1975).
Take the 1st tune, "You Know What I Mean"...you mean the bass doesn't have to play on Beat 1?!?
Every tune is a Classic. The Beatles' "She's A Woman"...I didn't even recognize it!

Check out the recent Live At Ronnie Scott's album/DVD for an uptempo version of "Scatterbrain".

...sounds like he's still playing the same set of strings that he used for Blow By Blow!

+1, I was already a huge Beck fan when the album came out and I was not disappointed. There were rumors that its was going to be a instrumental album, but by that time in my listening tastes, it was perfect timing.

Same here! I liked Rock instrumentals/jam sections (as bands of that time were expected to be capable of)...
...& in '75, my uncle started turning me onto Jazz...Blow By Blow was a perfect fit.
Possibly a desert island disc for me.

Yes, you're correct.
Amazing...no string endorsement for Phil, huh?

I remember buying Blow By Blow on vinyl back in '75 with funds from my summer job. A great album then and a great album now. I think I prefer Jeff's playing then before he discovered the whammy bar.

So awesome!!

I Really like this album.
This album in '75 was ear training ground toward Jazz...

Sequence went Blow by Blow > One of a Kind > Land of the Midnight Sun > Heavy Weather...

Chen played perfect for the music.

Anyone know what kind of bass was actually used on the album? I would be interested to know...

I saw Phil Chen play with the 21st Century Doors a few years back. Solid bass playing. BTW, Robby Krieger was the best part of that show.a
