Because the bass weight isnt resting on anything...unless its his left hand...but thats moving along the neck... http://img61.imageshack.us/my.php?im...harris3jt9.jpg |

| | | | i'm not exactly versed in steve harris' performances, but in this picture it doesn't really look like hes playing so much as posing. His fingers on his right hand don't look like theyre going to be attacking the strings any time soon as you can see the thumb is tucked behind the body, and the fretting hand doesnt look like it's ready to do any crazy frettiing at the moment.

In this case (and assuming standard tuning!) I'd say SH is playing a E between the E and the A string, probably ending up a song. |

Otherwise, look at his left hand, he grabs the neck, and this is usualy done whileplaying open strings, like the middle section of 2 minutes to midnight. |

Love Steve Harris!!!!

Am I the only one who thinks about performance when learning/playing a song?
Steve already has the places he is going to use the "gun move" mapped out in his brain. Watch Maiden in concert 2 nights in a row.....you will see Harris using this move in the SAME place in the SAME songs every night. In sections where he is hanging on a single note for a stretch OR breaks where he just pops in on a note or 2.
In the band I am in we certainly have no "planned choreography" but in certain songs we make the same moves night after night. Myself I think about performance every time I learn a song. I think ENTERTAINMENT is just as important as performance in live music.

Doesn't matter where his arm is coming in from. I've seen a few vids of Maiden where he does that move. Shooting the audience and all. |

| | | | I don't think about performance. I play. If the music moves me to jump off a riser or do a "move" then I do it. I don't plan out or choreograph what I'm going to do during certain parts of a song.
I agree that entertainment IS important. But I'm more entertained by watching someone who is into the music they are making than by someone doing practiced moves on a stage and going through the motions.
