i'm not exactly versed in steve harris' performances, but in this picture it doesn't really look like hes playing so much as posing. His fingers on his right hand don't look like theyre going to be attacking the strings any time soon as you can see the thumb is tucked behind the body, and the fretting hand doesnt look like it's ready to do any crazy frettiing at the moment.

Yeah, that would be my guess. It's a posed picture.

I've seen him do the "oh my bass is a machine gun" pose live before whilst playing.

If you pull the bass forward with your left hand so the strap is tight on your body you can play with your right hand as long as you've got you're left hand fixed.

In this case (and assuming standard tuning!) I'd say SH is playing a E between the E and the A string, probably ending up a song.

Check it out. I knew I had seen it somewhere before. 3:03 or thereabouts. Enjoy.

that thumb aint behind the body, he's playing with a floating thumb, so its "hidden" is behind the rest of the hand.

Otherwise, look at his left hand, he grabs the neck, and this is usualy done whileplaying open strings, like the middle section of 2 minutes to midnight.

I agree with the other posters - he appears to be just working the open E in that photo (which is fantastic).

Love Steve Harris!!!!

I cannot believe this is a question.

Am I the only one who thinks about performance when learning/playing a song?

Steve already has the places he is going to use the "gun move" mapped out in his brain. Watch Maiden in concert 2 nights in a row.....you will see Harris using this move in the SAME place in the SAME songs every night. In sections where he is hanging on a single note for a stretch OR breaks where he just pops in on a note or 2.

In the band I am in we certainly have no "planned choreography" but in certain songs we make the same moves night after night. Myself I think about performance every time I learn a song. I think ENTERTAINMENT is just as important as performance in live music.

Like the binding on that P body! But yeah, it's not uncommon for Steve Harris to do that while playing.

Different way than in the picture though Here he have the arm around the body and come in behind the bridge, the other one looks like hes actually holding the bass between his thumb and the rest of the hand.. I cant actually remember having thought about or noticed it before, wich is weird, since I was sickly obsessed with him for a few years..

The hidden skeletal hand of Eddie supports the bass.

Did a still of the video and at 3:04, you can see his hand and fingers in line with the bridge but the thumb is behind the bass, holding it and hitting a few notes. Doesn't matter where his arm is coming in from. I've seen a few vids of Maiden where he does that move. Shooting the audience and all.

How about here at 3:09. You can see his thumb and elbow isn't holding the bass.

I don't think about performance. I play. If the music moves me to jump off a riser or do a "move" then I do it. I don't plan out or choreograph what I'm going to do during certain parts of a song.

I agree that entertainment IS important. But I'm more entertained by watching someone who is into the music they are making than by someone doing practiced moves on a stage and going through the motions.
