How many bassists to study???

Sign in to disble this ad
I think its is better to explore a few bassists so you can study different approaches. It`s the only way you can call someone a real influences on your style and choice of notes... I tended to rush over the material but now I limited the bassists I am studying to 5 (now I am with roscoe Beck for some months, then I will change, and so on). How many bassists you can study and you consider a real influence??? Do you think its better less than more???

i think it's better to take in as much music as you can--I would pick a general direction to start, but that will all branch out into new styles and artists

I've never been influenced by a large amount of bass players at the same time. it's a gradual evolution, as you're tastes change the players who influence you will change. If you learn from all of these influences as you change, than over time your own style will start to emerge, sort of like a snowball affect.

go with the flow. listen and learn, but play what sounds good and comes natural to you.

I agree..Problem comes when you like lots of bassists, and you ve heard to many styles. Moreover most of us have spent more time listening to music than playing.

I had it explained to me like this.
" If you steal from only one bass player, its plagarism. If you steal from everybody, its research"

If I like what I hear in a piece of music, then it's worth studying.

Studying just one bassist in depth is only useful if I really, really like what he does.

if you're just wanting to sound like a handful of bassists that you studied, go ahead and limit yourself. but having a small influence pool does nothing to make you have an individual style.
