I can't get into Jaco!

Ok folks, I know he revolutionised the way people viewed bass, BUT I really can't get into the whole jazz/prog/rock thing. Every other bassist seems to love him, but I really really find his material mind numbingly boring. Someone like Flea engages me WAY more! Is this a view shared by anyone?

If it's not your thing, then it's not your thing.

I'm not a big fan of Jaco myself. But I respect him what he has done in his music career.

I can't get into Flea though.
Although I think Flea is a talented bassist with very good technique. I just don't dig his music.

That's okay, I can't get into Nickelback. Everything's not for everyone.

To each his own. Personally, I don't dig any of the Jaco solo stuff or Weather Report that I've heard, but absolutely love the stuff he did with Joni Mitchell.

The way he played with Joni was simply beautiful.

I'm not afraid to say I don't like Jaco either. What sucks around here is that people can run around saying how they hate Les Claypool and everything about him and its their "opinion", but say you can't stand listening to Jaco and its blasphemy.

Of course I'm on the Claypool/Flea side of the spectrum...I think the jazzy Jaco kinda music seems boring when you're used to funkin your brains out.

No problem to me. I have some Jaco CD's and I appreciate his playing but I can't get into it to the extent where I listen to it all the time. I'm more of a groove guy than a soloist type of player so I dig guys like Jamerson, Paladino and Bootsy Collins (James Brown era and some his later stuff).

Jaco was revolutionary so you can appreciate his contribution without necessarily being a fan.

I don't really like Stanley Clarke. I think he's an incredible talent but I just can't get into what he does personally. That doesn't mean I don't think he's good though.

I'd rather lock in listening to a hypnotic bass groove, a la early 70's JB, than wanking by Jaco or any other solo player any day of the week. For me, the reason for bass is cementing that solid foundation; YMMV.

I do appreciate Jacos genuis with the bass, but I rather have/listen the groovablity chops of Francis Rocco Prestia or many of bassdoms other great in the pocket groovers any day.

Oh, and yes Jaco did groove well and thats when I like him best!

Make a thread about it!

I used to be a pretty big fan of Les Claypool and at one time I liked the Chilis, but then I turned 15 and they lost their appeal.

No one if forcing anyone to like any particular Bass Player that has attained some level of Fame.

If you did not care for the music Jaco played then you might not be into him.

Being open minded and honest with yourself is important. Follow your heart and explore the music that you enjoy. Most great players have absorbed influences from a variety of places - either consciously or by the mere fact they were exposed to certain music growing up - or music that was popular during that time.

I like Jaco - do I listen to everything he played - no - but there are some performances I love - but my tastes are broad and I force my self to listen and try to absorb types of music that may not be my first choice.

Keep in mind - depending on where your musical path takes you - you may find yourself playing at least some music that is not your favorite from a musician's perspective - but if you plan on entertaining you have to cover a broader base than what you might personally enjoy. We have all played tunes for the audiences sake that personally are not challenging or very gratifying - but you have take the good with the bad sometime depending on your circumstances.

If you are exclusively playing one type of music- like Metal - may not be an issue at all - but I can tell you a little bit of Jaco in your metal riff could sound amazing applied correctly in the context of a song - so I guess I am saying - play what you enjoy - but don't let it limit your growth - cause it is all good in creating the collective whole of a musician.

Wow. Talk about throwing a grenade.

- Not liking Jaco - huh?

- Flea - good player, but I actually think he's overrated. Too much talk about - not a whole lot.

- Nickelback - if what'shisname the singer actually had more than one trick/tone/pony to his voice,
I might be able to listen to it more. His voice has become like nails on a chalkboard to me.
