I got $17.10 in my iTunes, suggest a BASSIST

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello

I have $17.10 in my iTunes store account and am looking for some new tunes to groove on.

Obviously it doesn't have to be a solo bassist, and I am open to many different kinds of music. My favorite bassist is probably George Porter Jr.

Stipulations:
-I prefer something that really grooves as opposed to technically impressive.
-I don't want it to be too difficult (I'd like to be able to figure out the lines with my ears and Pandora)

So Please suggest a bassist and examples of their best works!! THANKS

Stu Zender. Pick any of Jamiroquai's first three albums.

There's loads of motown type stuff on iTunes that has great grooves.

I've found iTunes to be like YouTube, you search for something and you end up a magical mystery tour of allsorts of stuff. I suggest take an evening or more, and just spend a few hours trauling and listening to stuff, it's more fun that people just telling what to buy and also opens your eyes and ears to new music and artists. every time i'm on iTunes i discover a new artist or tune i like.

Peter Tosh's first record, Legalize It. One of the finest reggae records of all time, and it certainly hits both of your requirements.Family Man is one of the greatest bassists to listen to when it comes to feel and groove.
Check out The Title Track

Thrust is particularly badass - Paul Jackson and Mike Clark are the most blinding rhythm section!

True!
You can also try any Miles Davis album with Michael Henderson on bass. Amazing!

Richard Bona - "Tiki"

or if you prefer live acts, " Bona makes you sweat", his very last. Tiki would be better if you want to work Bona basslines.

since you dig george porter jr, i bet you would dig kenny gradney, so I recomend Little Feat. I'd get "Feets Don't Fail Me Now" and I would also get a couple free 70s shows from archive.org

Ziggy Marley, 'X Marks the Spot.' Not a big reggae fan but this turned my head around. The whole album kills('Joy and Blues'). Bassist is Aston Barrett.

+1 on Rocco. Also anything with Oteil Burbridge (He's heavily influenced by Rocco.)

I'm a HUGE Meters fan, and one of the things I did awhile back was buy a bunch of New Orleans brass band records and learn the tuba lines on bass. A lot George Porter Jr's stuff is based on those old brass band lines. I recommend the Dirty Dozen Brass Band's "Funeral For A Friend" for some great performances of classic NOLA tunes. Also anything by Rebirth Brass Band or the Soul Rebels Brass Band.
