Check out his solo on this School Days jam. It's about 3 minutes in. It's melodic, thick, and brief. The rest of the so called bass heroes that follow him left me cold and unimpressed. Can't wait to hear a Flea solo record now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhWPZ...eature=related

| | | | God that is really impressive. He looks like he's going to really dig in but the sound is definedand controlled as anything.
Am I the only bassist out there who thinks Billy Sheenan is bloody awful? |

Billy has a lot of flash - but try to play what he played and then call it cliche IMO and IME.

More substance without useless flash that adds nothing to the musicality of the piece.

For wowing musicians, I'd give the nod to Flea and Bunny.
I'm not sure what the context is for that clip, what kind of audience it is, but I'm thinking Bunny did the best at eliciting both kinds of "wow". At least from me, though I admite Flea's the most as far as what I wish I could/would do in that situation especially when going first.
When I saw Stanley with Return To Forever last year, all the complicated musical stuff he did during his db solo went past most people (most people don't even know a db solo from the usual bunch of walking, much less the difficulty in sounding complex chords on the thing) but when he went into a schtick of slapping the strings and bass body the crowd roared.

Problem is, that people formulate their opinion of players, only after listening to one album, or a few songs. I don't judge anyone these days, until i've investigated them thoroughly. This is how I finally came to the conclusion that Geddy Lee IS a brilliant player. I didn't think this at first because I was listening to the wrong stuff... |

| | | | +1 Flea is very talented. Not so sure what people were seeing/hearing here from him that was so special as he has been a special player for 20+ years. What is unfortuante about Rush is that people formulate an opinion on them after listening to Fly By Night or something and think that is what Rush sounds like. |

Yea, you see what I'm saying. It's important we give things time. |

| | | Stanley seemed to enjoy ol' Bill's solo most - I liked it as you don't see that much neck bending at a jazz gig!
I also have a newly found respect for his interior decorator - Flea's selling his Malibu house and these were from the listing:
