I have a newly found respect for Flea

Check out his solo on this School Days jam. It's about 3 minutes in. It's melodic, thick, and brief. The rest of the so called bass heroes that follow him left me cold and unimpressed. Can't wait to hear a Flea solo record now.

God that is really impressive. He looks like he's going to really dig in but the sound is definedand controlled as anything.

Am I the only bassist out there who thinks Billy Sheenan is bloody awful?

Flea was amazing. I love the Chili Peppers, but this truly shows how great Flea is that he can play just about anything. I love him even more now.

fleas solo actually was the most musical.. a bit of a suprise. even his diddnt exactly floor me, though

bunny brunel i've never really liked.. his solo was pretty lame..

billy sheehan is always fun but he's almost a novelty at this point..

when i first saw what the video was, i got real excited. after i saw it i was really dissapointed..

Nope, I loathe Sheehan, too. Go Home Billy.

Sheehan's solo stuff leaves me yawning, but when he works with a band, it's a whole 'nother story. Much like Jaco.

Only the first and the last (Flea and Stanley Clarke) really got me. The rest was more or less filler.

Why? I will say I have not heard much of his stuff lately and the last time I saw him was with Vai in 04 I think but the stuff Billy did with Roth was brilliant. Granted it was 20 years ago.

Flea, Stu and Hamm were the most impressive.

Billy has a lot of flash - but try to play what he played and then call it cliche IMO and IME.

While Flea's solo was surprisingly good (I'm not the biggest Flea fan by a long shot) Bunny Brunel's bit was far and away the best thing up there. More substance without useless flash that adds nothing to the musicality of the piece.

I Agree. I thought Brunel's was great and "different" but I am a harmonics type guy.

I've just never been impressed by him. Sure he's talented, but when I hear him play I just feel 'enh' it's okay. Just me though, to each his own.

For entertaining a typical audience, surely Billy wins.

For wowing musicians, I'd give the nod to Flea and Bunny.

I'm not sure what the context is for that clip, what kind of audience it is, but I'm thinking Bunny did the best at eliciting both kinds of "wow". At least from me, though I admite Flea's the most as far as what I wish I could/would do in that situation especially when going first.

When I saw Stanley with Return To Forever last year, all the complicated musical stuff he did during his db solo went past most people (most people don't even know a db solo from the usual bunch of walking, much less the difficulty in sounding complex chords on the thing) but when he went into a schtick of slapping the strings and bass body the crowd roared.

Flea can play, flea always could play. If you listen to a lot of RHCP jams, it's obvious to hear. Problem is, that people formulate their opinion of players, only after listening to one album, or a few songs. I don't judge anyone these days, until i've investigated them thoroughly. This is how I finally came to the conclusion that Geddy Lee IS a brilliant player. I didn't think this at first because I was listening to the wrong stuff...

+1 Flea is very talented. Not so sure what people were seeing/hearing here from him that was so special as he has been a special player for 20+ years. What is unfortuante about Rush is that people formulate an opinion on them after listening to Fly By Night or something and think that is what Rush sounds like.

Very true on the rush comment! Yea, you see what I'm saying. It's important we give things time.

Stanley seemed to enjoy ol' Bill's solo most - I liked it as you don't see that much neck bending at a jazz gig!

I also have a newly found respect for his interior decorator - Flea's selling his Malibu house and these were from the listing:
