Wow, what a player. His soloes are all melody and never a hint of self indulgence. Truly an inspiring player.
He was playing a his Citron signature bass, definitely a warmer more wooden tone than he's had in the past. |

At least I got to see Burton and Swallow once, in the early 1980's.

I saw the Sco-Trio with Swallow/Stewart when they were in ATL with the Brad Mehldau trio, that was amazing. |

| | | | I saw the Burton/Methany/Swallow/Sanchez tour about a week ago at Yoshi's in Oakland. It was a really great show. I was really impressed with Steve Swallow's playing. Honestly, he's never really been a player that I've listened to a lot. After hearing his playing last week, I'm pretty inspired to go back and check him out. His playing is so understated yet assertive and supportive. His solos are very melodic, thematic, and interesting. I've really been missing out. Can anyone reccomend some good Steve Swallow recordings that I should pick up? Love some suggestions here! |

| | | | Saw them in Detroit last week. Wonderful playing. That era of tunes (Carla Bley, etc.) is not my favorite, but it was very good. I'm not a big fan of Swallow's tone... tends to get very muddy and non-distinct to me in a group context, especially with guitar. However, when the band comes down and he solo's up high, it's just beautiful. |

Steve Swallow - 'Always Pack Your Uniform on Top'
Steve Swallow - 'Home'
Steve Swallow - 'Deconstructed'
Steve Swallow - 'Real Book'
Steve Swallow - 'Damaged in Transit'
John Scofield - 'En Route'
John Scofield/Pat Metheny - 'I Can See Your House From Here'
Steve Swallow/Carla Bley - 'Duets', 'Go Together', 'Are We There Yet?'
Carla Bley - 'The Lost Chords', 'Songs With Legs'
I hope this Burton/Metheny/Swallow/Sanchez lineup gets into the studio, or will at least put out a live disc. |

| | | | Cool, thanks for the recommendations. I have the Scofield/Methany album, and I do like his playing on that. Looks like I have much to check out - I'm going to look for these albums. If anyone has any suggestions from the time period when Methany played in the Burton band with Swallow on bass, I'd love to get any of those album names too. Thanks!
When I saw the group at Yoshi's last week, they were recording live which Gary Burton said was going to be part of an upcoming live album release . . . . |

Dreams So Real
Passengers Ring and Dreams So Real have Mick Goodrick on electric 6-string and Metheny on electric 12-string. Ring and Passengers also include Eberhard Weber on EUB.
Swallow was playing a Gibson EB-3 during the 1970's, so his sound was different, but his concept is similar.
All are on ECM and should be in print.
P.S. One of my favorite moments in recorded music is start of Metheny's solo on "Syndrome" from Dreams So Real.

I am wondering when/if Concord Records will release a live record by Burton/Metheny/Swallow/Sanchez.

Heaven on earth. Tone - and audio fidelity in the theater - to die for.
