However, there was no way I could've not shared this with you guys, considering how everyone always is saying how mediocre a bassist the guy is.
It's a clip of KISS playing Shock Me last Saturday.
He did some KILLER fills. I mean KILLER. I'm a huge Gene fan and I didn't even think he had it in him.
At 1:11, 1:56, and again at 3:24. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoq_rRnCzvY
Not intended to make you guys like him, just sharing that cause I thought it was pretty damn good for a "mediocre bassist".

Some like Geddy. Some like Entwistle. Alot like Jaco.
I like all three.
Alot of threads are started about all of them alot more frequently than any threads about Gene Simmons.
Problem??

In all seriousness, Gene isn't my favorite bassist, but he did inspire to pick up bass and I actually learned to play bass entirely on KISS' first 6 albums before I went and expanded. Plus I think he gets a very bad rap for no apparent reason. I mean sure, nowadays, he would never be considered fantastic, but if you were to keep HIS ego from blinding YOU, you would see that in the beginning, he was a true hungry musician and bassist and he wrote alot of great basslines and music and nowadays, he does alot improvising live. Very nice basslines for back then.
You don't have to like him, no problem.
Just don't bash on the guy when he clearly knows what he's doing.
And I will continue to validate and promote Gene Simmons the bassist, and I make no apologies about that fact.
FYI, Robert DeLeo/Jamerson are my favorite bassists, with Gene close behind.
Now I'm hungry for a grilled cheese sammich with bacon in the middle.

To the OP -- those fills aren't killer bro. They're very pedestrian -- something someone should able to do after playing a year or so.
That song stunk too.
Here's the thing with Gene. if you like the band and you're starting out on bass and get a kick out of learning those parts...great. It'll get you to the next level. But no one who is skilled is going to be convinced that Simmons is an exceptional player. In fact, for someone doing it as long as he, he's sub par -- and even he would admit it. |

Has a great ear for melody and rhythm.
Is it because he doesn't play in odd time that everyone hates him?? Or because he doesnt play 64th notes??

To be honest, Kiss's music isn't particularly rhythmic or melodic. It's basic wank rock and roll. Mostly 8th notes with the bass following the guitar. A couple of tunes have a decent hook. They're a show. Little more. And they know it. Gene plays the parts. Decently. And that's it. |
