Surely I can't be the only one?
I just finished T-Lev's book "Beyond the Bass Clef" last night. He's one of my all-time favorite bassists, and it was a really enjoyable read, Great to get some advice from a master and just kind of dig into his overall philosophy.
But so, I had to put on Gabriel 2 ("Scratch") in the car this AM, because his playing on that record -- on bass, upright, and Stick -- is just plain bad-a$$.
Does anybody know what kind of distortion(s) he used at that time? His tone has this buzzed-out sustain that just KILLS!
Can I get an amen on Brother Tony ?!?

I know analogman have made him a rehoused one but they haven't done any mods other than true bypass if it didn't already have it.

I remembered Tony for being responsible for making me proud to be a bass player, with a song no one mentions: Modelman in the Three of a Perfect Pair album, and also remembered I never knew how he got the bass to sound like that. Can anyone help?
BTW "Man with an Open heart" is also a good example....
This question is more than 20 years old! |

The coolest thing, however, is that when I ordered BTBC a few years back there was a number of pages with no printing on them. I called Papa Bear Records to see what could be done, and spoke to Tony who immediately got my info to send out a replacement copy priority mail totally free of charge. He even refused my offer to return the defective copy so that he could perhaps deal with his printer for a refund. Quite the gentleman, and seemed honestly awestruck when I informed him about just how much of an influence he was on my playing as well as writing basslines. |

The book is worth it for those who haven't read it. Very funny.
And if some of you like his supportive playing, you might want to try to get a copy of "Kevin Parent - Les vents ont changé". It's in french but the bass playing is superb. One of my favorite album. |
