I Love Tony Levin

Surely I can't be the only one?

I just finished T-Lev's book "Beyond the Bass Clef" last night. He's one of my all-time favorite bassists, and it was a really enjoyable read, Great to get some advice from a master and just kind of dig into his overall philosophy.

But so, I had to put on Gabriel 2 ("Scratch") in the car this AM, because his playing on that record -- on bass, upright, and Stick -- is just plain bad-a$$.

Does anybody know what kind of distortion(s) he used at that time? His tone has this buzzed-out sustain that just KILLS!

Can I get an amen on Brother Tony ?!?

He normally uses a Big Muff just a bog standard new one, he apparently carries like 10 on tour because he breaks them.

I know analogman have made him a rehoused one but they haven't done any mods other than true bypass if it didn't already have it.

Tony Levin has been a huge influence on my non metal playing, and in some respects my metal playing. His work with King Crimson and Peter Gabriel is some of the best "for the song" bass playing in the history of music.

Tony is the consummate pro and a really nice guy to boot. I'll have to check out his book.

I've always had immense respect for Tony, but he has enver really hit me as a top floor player. He is great though.

Yep. Definetly one of my biggest bass playing influences. I treasure my pair of Funk Fingers.

Well well, if it isn't my two favourite drummers AND Levin AND Keneally - at once! That must mean madness and fantastic music.

Well, this question came up in my mind the other day.

I remembered Tony for being responsible for making me proud to be a bass player, with a song no one mentions: Modelman in the Three of a Perfect Pair album, and also remembered I never knew how he got the bass to sound like that. Can anyone help?
BTW "Man with an Open heart" is also a good example....

This question is more than 20 years old!

Like Matt, a huge influence on my playing in two areas specifically - playing fretless melodically and realizing the space between notes - TLev is a Master at when *not* to play.

The coolest thing, however, is that when I ordered BTBC a few years back there was a number of pages with no printing on them. I called Papa Bear Records to see what could be done, and spoke to Tony who immediately got my info to send out a replacement copy priority mail totally free of charge. He even refused my offer to return the defective copy so that he could perhaps deal with his printer for a refund. Quite the gentleman, and seemed honestly awestruck when I informed him about just how much of an influence he was on my playing as well as writing basslines.

Totally! He's also a very nice guy. He was the first big name bass player I met and he took the time to talk with me. Very nice guy.

The book is worth it for those who haven't read it. Very funny.

And if some of you like his supportive playing, you might want to try to get a copy of "Kevin Parent - Les vents ont changé". It's in french but the bass playing is superb. One of my favorite album.

Yeah, but not too hard to make.
