This dude is officially my idol right now, I need to play like he does on the guitar, only I want to do it on bass. Ive never seen a bass player that is doing this sort of Neo Classical type music. This is the stuff I want to play. Anyone know of a guy who plays this stuff on bass? I need to learn to play like this. Im even seriously thinking about getting a cheap guitar and amp because of what this dude does. |

Great tone and technique overplays a little for my liking though. Best way to learn this kinda thing is to transcribe classical music. Look at what he's in to and apply it to bass.
Maybe you'd be better off with a guitar, from your posts you seem to like this shredding thing quite a lot. Why don't you sit back and learn some grooves or how to read?

Just pick up anything by Bach (keyboard music, particularly, the Harmonized Chorales or the Two and Three-Part Inventions) and learn the bass parts. |

You can easily find his cello suites transcribed for bass, and these make excellent learning tools. From there on you can start learning some of the keyboard pieces…you may need to transcribe these yourself...great way to learn and improve your chops.
Oh and practice too….I find that when I do that, the hot lixxx become second nature. |

My wife was like "I love this part, it really sounds like classical music to me."
I told her that it was totally influenced by people like Yngwie, who used and abused the neo-classical style in the 80s and early 90s.
That vid of Yngwie with Alcatraz is probably close to 20 years old. At least 15 for sure.

Definitely start with the inventions, then keyboard works, like the Well Tempered Clavier. All Yngwie really is is fast, yet harmonically simple Baroque music. |

| | | | Billy Sheehan is the man. Kyle Honea does the shred tapping thing too, and does solo albums and can be found around the place.
Also, search for "shred" on these forums, and you'll be pointed in the right direction. |

More of a jazz fusion guy, but he does this crazy arpeggio taping stuff that would rival Malmsteen any day.
Or Tom Kennedy.
Another fusion guy who plays with Dave Weckle. Pick up Weckle's live disc released a few years ago. Kennedy wails on it.

More bop lines than you can shake a stick at, whereas Malmsteen doesn't EVER play anything altered or out of regular harmony. Just a lot of harmonic minor. |
