Just when I think I may be getting good enough to be considered mediocre, I see something like this. (I am 20 and have been playing for just under 2 years... without a teacher for financial reasons.)

Does look sorta like a Fedora. But I don't think it is.

His father is also a bass player, he has been sent to some music conservatory & started at the age of 10. If we all had that guidance & push???

hmmm..

i guess i don't get fine jazz then...

not to be trolling, but i find the whole thing very hard to follow...his solo felt..off. not very flowing at all, more blocky. the drum solo afterward was nice, but then broke beat to come in on the one? i guess. the entire rhythm felt...contrived almost.

maybe i need to listen to more jazz.

not doubting his technical ability at all, he can reach notes very well for having such small hands.

can anybody tell me what i'm missing?

EDIT: i listened to the video linked in the first post of the second thread, and that is very nice, very smooth, flowing, and with skill. is the video from this thread a different vein of jazz than the other?

he's like 8 man cut him a break

I mean I would have been greatful if the worst thing someone could say about my playing is that it felt 'contrived' at that age

If you're amazing techinically at 10, you are a monster at feel and groove at the age of 20.

Videos like this make me wonder where Jaco would be if he arrived on the scene in the new millennium. The internet unearths an enormous amount of unfathomable talent. I wonder how many dudes were out there playing circles around Jaco that were just never "discovered", or just had no chance of getting themselves under the spotlight.

This internet stuff is great for some. If you're talented, and have half a marketing brain, the world will know about you.

At this point in time Jaco and his legacy are affected by what I call the Charlie Parker syndrome ;A artist whose style and techniques have become a part of the way that people learn the instrument who was a major innovator in their own time.I'm sure there were guy's playing just as much as Jaco was that you never heard of
