Ian Hill, let's talk under rated!

Sign in to disble this ad

This guy has been with Judas Priest pretty much from the beginning. He gets very little face time aways being in the shadow of Halford, Tipton, and Downing.

He doesn't get mentioned like Sarzo, Sixx and the like because Hill stayed out of the spotlight and just played the frickin' bass like a good bass player should.

Some of his most outstanding work was on Priest's Brittish Steel album and the bass line he wrote for "Breakin' the Law" was pure freaking genious!!!

He'd get more love if you could ever hear him in the mix.

That being said I've always felt that Judas Priest was just a sick tight band and since a lot of that falls on the bassist, he must be doing a pretty good job.

It seems like he wasn't always going for the super minimalist apporach, I watched a couple of videos from way back when Judas Priest still played psychedelic rock and he was all over the fretboard in them. I could hardly believe it was the same band but it indeed was! I can't find the footage any more but it's most likely still there in the depths of Youtube.

As someone already pointed out, check his playing on the first few records. The guy can play.

Now on a side note, I saw Judas Priest on their most recent tour, and the band just oozed groove, and a large chuck of that was coming form Ian. To me, he just epitomizes solid bass playing, albeit in a very non-flashy way.

+1.

I've started a couple of Ian Hill threads since I started hanging out here, and they both died quickly.

Hill has a very understated style of playing- simple, but quite elegant when Tipton and Downing open up a bit of space for him to strut his stuff, which, sadly, doesn't happen nearly often enough. He stays firmly in the pocket, doesn't show off, but always does what the song needs.

And I love his tone on the first two Priest albums.

"Painkiller" was great.

And the bass lines are pretty strong on "Nostradamus".

Gotta love a band that can take the life of a dead French guy who made a lot of vague prophecies that you can backfit whatever disaster happened this past week and say he predicted it and turn it into the coolest concept album to come along since "The Wall".

Funky reggae-like bassline in a Priest song? Like Wile E Coyote, super-genius!

I play the Ian Hill role in a Judas Priest tib. He's not as plain vanilla as people think. He may not show technical brilliance like jaco, but he definitely has his tasty moments. It's one of the most enjoyable music experiences I've had, albeit not the most technically challenging. Check us out @

Anything from 2009 is me, and yeah, the hair is fake. LOL

I'm about 40 or so and when I was young and looking for role models for Bass, I always thought Mr Hill was the go to man for Rock and Metal.
No one was heavier than him. He always played exactly the heaviest line that was needed for the song, and he played it right in front of his stack(s) and just killed you with it. Just look at some of the pics from unleashed in the east and tell me he wasn't one Heavy mother. As for the mix, well you just had to listen a little harder is all. After all it was the 70's / 80's and midrange was king.

Ian Hill still kills!
