Ian Hill's tone on Rocka Rolla

So, I'm listening to Rocka Rolla, and really digging Ian Hill's tone on that album.

It's really rich, warm, deep, heavy, bassy, perfect.

I'm guessing he was playing a Fender J bass, probably fingerstyle, I don't think he started using a pick until the '80's. It almost sounds like he was using flatwound strings, though that seems unlikely.

Does anybody know what he was playing through on that album?

I don't think my local music store carries that.

Maybe I could order it from zZounds?
