I saw the Welcome to America tour and although she sounds good she was the LEAST impressive bassist I've seen Prince use IMHO. This is based on seeing him Live 5 times since 1982.

How so? Not enough pocket/groove? Just curious because I know from seeing Prince as well that his gig isn't necessarily a chop-fest for the bassist. If I was her I'd be intimidated by the groove prowess of my employer on bass!

i don't hear it with prince on bass. i once saw him do a duet with larry graham and larry smoked his ass. sounded better, played better...prince is a good bassist, but he just doesn't do anything for me.

IMO, Prince was a very original slapper. When everybody else was just doing octaves, he was using fifths, sevenths, other intervals. Just check out stuff like Lady Cab Driver and Let's Work.

Yes and no. Prince played bass and everything else on that track but it was released as The Time.

ida was great, held the groove and when asked to solo she did and it sounded great. her tone was very low (pbass pickup and MM pickup) and cut through the mix well.

BUT TONIGHT WAS BASS NIGHT!!!!

Larry graham came out and did some sly songs and prince songs (and had some wicked solos), then larry and prince had a slap battle, it was amazing and epic (and i'm not a slapper).

he also brought out sheila E and chaka khan.

get to a show if you can, 25 bucks for the cheap seats (in LA) and he played for over 3 hours.

Gee, there's a surprise.

I'm sitting here still trying to think of one bassist who could smoke Larry's ass.

I think Prince is well-respected by musicians generally, but he has his detractors and there are definitely some people who just don't dig his music. However, if you see him live- the catalog of hits, the amazing band, the incredible vocals, unbelievable musicianship and all- around entertainment skills- He's somewhat peerless, really.
