ideal rhythm section

If you could throw together an ideal rhythm section, who would be in it and why?

Here's mine: Carter Beauford and Anthony Jackson. Carter is one of the most consistently creative drummers I know of. Every thing he does drips with virtuosity, but it is all in the service of the groove

Anthony Jackson is Anthony Jackson. Need I say more? Ok, if I must: Anthony is a great all-around bassist, and is ever-so-tasteful. He gets a nice, growly, powerful fingerstyle tone, and he never overuses his instrument's extended range. And like Carter, he is a total in-the-groove virtuoso.

It already existed: Al Jackson Jr. and Duck Dunn. No flash, but pocket for weeks and weeks.

Neal Peart and Les Claypool would be pretty neat.

A big +1 to this!

I'm not sure who I'd pair him with though... I'll get back to ya!

Mine would probably Anthony Jackson and Colaiuta/Gadd.

Al Cisneros on bass and Chris Hakius on drums. Because OM rocks. Too bad Chris left.

Sounds like an awesome combo! I'd love to maybe hear AJ paired with Jonathan Mover or perhaps Billy Cobham.

However, the obvious dream rhythm section for me would be Stuart Hamm and Neil Peart. However, I'd like to hear Stu with some others too: Gary Husband, Ronald Bruner Jr., Dennis Chambers, Jeff Sipe etc etc...

Ideal has so much to do with the style of music being considered. That said, this pairing seems pretty good. . .

Why would you prefer Richard Davis on EB?
Just wondering.

BTW-
Is this a 'fantasy' thread or what?

Patitucci & Colaiuta, for example, are together on a few recordings...check out Patitucci's debut album or The Akoustic Band Live in Tokyo (& hear the huge difference between Vinnie & Weckl).
Colaiuta with anyone(even Sting) is pretty happenin'...Abe Laboriel & Vinnie made a decent pairing on Karizma/David Garfield's Live At The Baked Potato.

Rocco & Garibaldi, of course. How about mixing it up with Rocco & Mike Clarke and Paul Jackson & Garibaldi?

And-
If Anthony Jackson & Carter Beauford is your thing-
Jackson with 'El Negro' is pretty damn close.

Just to make things intriguing (since this is a fantasy thread, after all)

James Jamerson and the Motown drummers (Benny Benjamin especially) had an amazing rhythm section. So many examples of their genius out there. Perhaps Marvin Gaye's Heard it Through the Grapevine is a good example, but there are so many.

One drummer who doesn't get enough credit is Stephen Morris, of Joy Division and New Order. Precise, creative and with his own personality. As is the case with Ringo Starr, I find a drummer having his own style more important than being flashy. Morris could make any band sound professional I think.
