If you could take one lesson...

...from any bassist out there, currently alive, who would it be? (it can be a long lesson if you'd like, money's no object and theoretically they have all day for you)

For me: either Pino Palladino, in hopes that he could give me some insight on his rather simple, laid back groovy basslines, or Chris Chaney for the same reason. Both are versatile in almost any genre and I'd like to do the same.

I'd probably go with Geddy Lee, since I love his bass lines, and need serious help with YYZ, so why not go for the man himself?

also, I would love to know how he sets his bass up, since he plays rather aggressivly, I need to know from him how he can set his action quite low, and not have fret buzz.

Reed Mathis...he could give me some pointers on the finer points of finding an individual voice on bass, and how to excel at it

Stanley Clarke, John Myung, Flea. Any of those 3.

Colin Greenwood or Tom Jenkinson.

Hard to say between those two. They each have a very different style and I want to cop both :-D

I'd go with Jean Baudin, he has some really funky lines.

And I think his basses are neat too.

The teacher i have right now, Charlie Kniceley.

I don't know any of the players personally, but charlie definitely teaches how to find unique character inside yourself and apply it to yourself. Open end lessons awesomely spawn the best

John Myung.

If it can be as long as I like it's 24/7 with a few long breaks

But I'd just want to be able to learn how to be as dedicated and focused as he is with practicing.

Ive already taken a lesson with Adam Nitti whos someone I would put on this list. Next opportunity I get Ill be taking one with Michael Manring (Id love to spend a day with him). Matt Garrison would be really cool. Chuck Bianchi and Jean Baudin could help me out with taking 2 handed tapping to the next level.

Jonas Hellborg. I admire how he has firm grasp on everything from classical, to rock, to jazz, to eastern music. However, if this wasn't as hypothetical as it is, I am far to undisciplined to take them.

Not in definite order and not the only things I would want from them -

Noticed the alive stipulation after I posted - added RIPs where needed and added one Bassist

1. Ray Brown RIP - The Swing (something I struggle with)
2. Stanley Clarke - Rhythm and Techniques for electric and DB
3. Slam Stewart RIP - Do I even have to say
4. Bill Laswell - Getting the SOUND and recording it, Bass as the Bottom, Magic of the Slow Groove, Bass' role in soundscapes, Working with Traditional Percussionists
5. Don Thompson - Small ensemble play/interaction, how to not over play

I don't want much

but since I just woke up from yet another nightmare, I thought I would ask for a lot of good stuff....

Peace,
S

60 minutes with Ron Carter, and hopefully he would invite me back next week and the week after that. His new CD is fantastic!
