I'm in love with JEFERSON AIRPLANE! Thanks you Jack Cassidy!

I just bought Jefferson Airplane's THE HITS CD and I can't stop listening to BALLAD OF YOU & ME & POONEIL, CROWN OF CREATION and WATCH HER RIDE! I'm in love with this group and I'm like 100 years late! I love the singers but most of all Jack Cassidy's style and tone!

Watch her ride has absolutely one of the best bass tones I've heard! Does he use a pick or his fingers? I wonder what kind of Bass this guy plays! I absolutely need to here more of this guy! Does he play in any other group?

I really love this group, I like their duet, tripped out opera kind of sound! One of my best purchases ever!

It's Casady, not Cassidy.

Jack played mainly (or exclusively?) with fingers. Guild Starfire was his main axe during the Jefferson Airplane years. Somebody surely will give the exact low-down of his gear etc.

You can rent or buy the DVD 'Fly Jefferson Airplane', lots of great Casady moments on it.

It's never too late discovering good music. When I was a kid I couldn't keep my eyes off Grace Slick. Now I'm listening more closely to Jorma and Jack.

So I repeat... Paging Mr. Thor...

In this clip on his home page, he's playing his signature bass! Look how relaxed he is! Are those flatwounds strings?

Welcome to the fan club. I've been in it for about 35 + years., dozens of concerts and too many CD's and LP's. I just took a class with him in March. Too cool for words. You should do it too!!

I saw his discogrophy, it's so large! Where do I start? I hear everybody says he killed that live album "Bless it's pointy little head"! I like live albums, so should I start there?

Previously I loved Billy Cox for his work with Jimi at woodstock and Band of Gypsies but I'm really loving Mr. Casady too! This just gives me more inspiration to play!

"Bless it's pointed little head" would be a good place to start. Others live CDs I recommend:
1) Hot Tuna's first record (entitled simply, "Hot Tuna")
2) Their second album ("First Pull up, then Pull down")
3) Country Joe and the Fish's Live, Fillmore West 1969 (often overlooked, but Jack, who was sitting in on these shows, simply kills on this one, and has one of his best solos on a commercial release, imo)
4) Tuna's "Double Dose" (supposedly, a re-mastered reissue is coming out soon)

The recent (2005) reissues of the Airplanes first 5 cds all have live, previously unreleased bonus tracks on them as well.

Two live Hot Tuna DVD's are available also (Live at Sweetwater, and Live at Fillmore)

and then there is this:

good luck,
hangman

Bless It's Pointed Little Head is a great place to start! It's probably the one that got me started liking live albums. Put it on, crank up the volume, and listen to a young master flex his muscles!

Great to hear the enthusiasm of a great bass player discovered. He's one of my all-time favorites too. He plays with fire and abandon and control all at once.

Jack still tours with Jorma Kaukonen occasionally as HOT TUNA. He's probably in his 60s now, but his playing is great, and since Hot Tuna is a guitar/bass duo, he plays a lot!

(Speaking of which, get yourself some Hot Tuna records)

These days Jack plays a signature model Epiphone, which aren't too expensive, and are well-liked on this forum (I've never had a chance to play one.)

If you want to get up-close and personal with Jack and learn a ton about his playing technique, style, and thinking, check out his instructional DVD. It's REALLY good.

Check out this video, it was posted originally on this site in another thread. Turn it UP!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q3FeR6JlPg

and this one

Hot Tuna is always on tour, either acoustic or electric. I saw them in Ft Lauderdale last summer, and they will be at the same venue this coming august (electric/acoustic, one set of each) and I just ordered tickets. It's nice because they usually play small venues and you can watch and listen to them up close and personal.

Their web site has tour dates, hopefully they will play near you. Until then, have fun gathering up all the JA and HT cd's. The ones that were listed in earlier postings are all great. Don't forget BURGERS, by Hot Tuna, also, though. Or as Jorma calls it, Hot Tuna- the Metal Years..... :-) And don't forget QUAH, Jorma's solo CD of a few years back, produced by Jack, fantastic CD. I got them both to sign one for me last month......

They're both in their early sixties, their playing is as great as ever. BTW Jorma's new solo CD, Stars in My Crown, is really really good.

PS, as mentioned in another thread on Jack here in this section (look for it), he plays on Voodoo Chile on Hendrix's Electric Ladyland album.
