Improsing over chords-Bassists that priorize slow melodic phrases over fast.

I am searching for exelent solo players who focus more in the melody than in fast licks. Can be tecnical but bassists who focus more in the melodic part.

Lots of bass players recorded with Miles. The most important was Paul Chambers. Chet Baker also played with many players.

You can often find the musicians listed where the recording is sold online. A site like Amazon.com could give you information, though you must deal with the English.

Are there special recordings you want to know about?

I hope you dídn´t get the thread (perhaps it is beacause my englisg is not so good)
In my opinion chet baker and miles are musicians who always priorize the melody instead of fast licks. Searching at TB, I see nobody made this question.
So give examples of bass players who priorize slow melodic phrases when soloing .

Dave Holland is one of my favorites. Listen to Not For Nothing (I'm listening to it right now - beautiful recording start to finish) Also Prime Directive, and for a real treat listen to Ones All. For that matter pretty much everything he has recorded is incredible. His playing is always melodic and thoughtful even through fast passages, but his accompaniment and soloing on ballads is exquisite. Big gorgeous tone, fantastic phrasing, and very melodic.

There is an unknown here in Houston named Alfred Kennedy. He plays the sweetest solos I've ever heard in my life.I was always stunned when I heard him solo. Then someone clued me in to the fact that he used to play sax.

I have wanted to get some video of him up on Youtube for awhile now.If I can get him to agree to being video taped I will come back to this thread and post some vids.

+1 for Steve Swallow, especially since you seem interested in electric players. His recording "Real Book" is one of my favorites though everything he has recorded is incredible.

I'll have to search for Dave Holland's electric stuff, most of the recordings I have of his are on DB.

DB vs Electric

Just curious, not wanting to be oppositional, but why is there a problem learning from DB players when you play electric?
Granted there are tonal differences and playability differences that have to be worked around, but (IMHO) it seems like that should be of minimal importance in a discussion of melodic playing.http://www.talkbass.com/forum/images...s/confused.gif

Dave LaRue is considered more of a speed bass player, but he's also very melodic and has a huge ear for melody as evidenced by his work with Steve Morse and the Dixie Dregs. And when Victor Wooten is playing with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and isn't making bass albums that show off his chops, he does some very melodic work indeed.

i'm not sure, but i have read several quotes from steve stating that he doesn't really care too much about the cab, as long as he has one. he feels that, gear wise, his bass and walter woods head are far more important.

Willie Weeks on the "Donny Hathaway - Live" album, on the track "Everything Is Everything".

NO slap, NO tap, NO double-thump, NO blizzard-of-notes-played-so-fast-it-sounds-like-white-noise.

Just one of the best and most MUSICAL Bass solos.

Ever.

In the history of the universe.
