It DEFINITELY was Wilton Felder. There was a transcription of the line by him, along with commentary about the session and the line, in Bass Player Magazine (July 1998). Not only was it Wilton (and it was his first hit record too), it was a single-coil Telecaster bass with flats recorded direct. He says "As a sax player I related to the line's hip chromatic movement..." and the line was mostly written out, and he just added a bit of himself to it.

Only if you can play it! And the prize should be the satisfaction of being able to play one of the hippest, coolest bass lines ever!

Oh, but I'm not the OP, so I don't know if I can award prizes...

John

Maybe he did the "Ashlee Simpson hoedown" version of the bassline (translation: finger syncing). I dunno. Maybe he did? But that's some sweet playing, and to sing backup while doing those phalangeal gymnastics, I just can't imagine how. My CPU horsepower would be both cores, 100% just doing the bassline.

Yeah no kidding. I have a hard enough time singing and playing at the same time. Much less singing and dancing and playing. That's why this video astounds me. Larry Graham.

I like this kind of trivia.

Keep it coming.

Bassists singing AND playing usually astounds me. Mainly because I CAN'T play and sing - unless it's just 8th notes and me singing backup la la la... LOL

Mark King, Les Claypool, Geddy Lee, Esperanza Spalding, Meshell Ndegeocello (just to name a few)

This vid is from 1991 after the Goulds left (guitarist died) Watch King's 'vibrato', then his bass line during Lindup's keyboard solo - then King's solo!!

That video is nuts. Yeah I don't get it lol. I can play very simple stuff and sing backup and that's about it. But I'm getting better at it.

I just picked up the J5 Live At The Forum (recorded in the early '70s)...the liner notes indicate Jermaine was on bass & Tito on guitar...with a road drummer & keyboardist.

...been listening to more of the J5 Live @The Forum discs. Again, the liners say Jermaine is on bass for these shows...man, he's comin' across like a combination between Jamerson & Jack Bruce. There is a raw & energetic vibe from the whole band. Great stuff for fans of the group. Now bring on the J5 cartoons!

Jermaine ABSOLUTELY played this part live.. and KILLED it. Get your hands and ears on "Live At The Forum." A 2 CD set released last year.. it's showcases 2 concerts.... one from 1970.. the other from 1972. You'll hear a 14 year old and 16 year old Jermaine tearing it up in the Jamerson style.
