This indeed insane, but alot of it is overkill imo. Too much distortion for me very unlike Entwistle.

and.......? It could be any kind of concert ? You can go over the top in any genre. Believe me I am a huge Who and Entwistle fan. I am merely saying I dont think this fits with the the Ox's usual style.

Amazing solo, even though I can't say I like the distortion. The man can play, whether you like his tone or not.

I love The Ox--I grew up on the Who, Zep, Yes . . .

But man, he lost me when he started going into that distorted, "every-frequency-in-the-spectrum is represented" bass sound. I'm just biased admittedly. Gimme that tone on Quadrophenia or Who's Next----man, I love his tone from those days (as a young lad I SAW the Quadrophenia tour, when he had his Fenderbird and a wall of Sunns . . . blew my young mind)

The Ox

That guy is one of the many reasons I play bass. I miss him.

Check out the track he did with Gov't Mule on The Deep End... I forget which volume....

I believe he kept on growing as a bass player up till the end, he got better & better, technique wise. Amazing in everything he played. He will be forever on the top rung of any bassist that ever lived, no one can argue what he did for bass.

Unfortunately, I believe from hearing issues, his bass sound degraded to a brittle stereo artificial active sound. It started when he went to Alembic them the carbon 5 battery Buzzard bird. I have to believe that with his level of hearing damage, what he heard and what we hear is quite different, i am willing to bet.

I much prefer his P bass / Fenderbird era sound, at its pinnacle on The Who Live at Leeds & Quadrophenia. His sound then was biting, growly, warm and cut through, a perfect balance between treble, mids & bass in my humble opinion. A bass sound that is everything a bass can be in its role.

Incredibly astute observation... sad, but spot-on.

That was the master of the instrument. He said in an interview that he wanted to be remembered as someone who wasn't copiable. Watch the Youtube video where he plays "Won't get fooled again" with the isolated bass line.

I'm gonna be honest here and say I wasn't terribly impressed. Entwistle was a fantastic bassist who did as much as anyone to enhance the art of bass playing, but that solo was sheer wankery, in my opinion. It was only able to keep my interest for the first couple of minutes, and after that I got annoyed by the constant "notes for notes' sake" playing.

Also, and I may be the only one to say this, but I kind of liked his tone here. It's pretty brittle, and there seemed to be a lot of white noise behind every note, but I thought it sounded decent for what he was doing.

I've seen this one several times trying to like it, but I can't. I love Entwistle's playing but that is just too much.

I think it's the distortion that kills it for me.

I remember seeing an interview once in the late 90's (ish) where he was going through his setup. He had that sound because he liked how it spread out across the spectrum, filled out the group's sound, and when he would solo, it would sound like guitar and bass together.

What strikes me is how his search for his tone evolved throughout the years. And while a lot of people may like his tone on older stuff, he obviously didn't, and so I think it's only right that he moved on and wa using the gear that he truly liked to use. And seeing as how he was using the Status basses for quite a long time by his standards, I think he was quite happy with the tone he was getting with 'em.

It should also be noted that a) he didn't use that distortion for everything, even in those last few years, and b) his tone sounded a lot different in the mix than in the solo. Just my .02
