J5 Studio musician listing?

Sign in to disble this ad
I was wondering if anyone could find a listing of the studio bassist from each of the Jackson 5 albums? I was really disappointed that Jermaine Jackson didn't get to play on the recordings, but i had assumed. Thanks in advance!

If it's Motown, then it's Jamerson or Babbitt, more than likely.

James Jamerson played on some, I'm sure of that.

You can hear a young/teen Jermaine Jackson on the recently issued Live At The Forum-

He does a great job covering the bass parts & vocals...he sounds like a cross between Jamerson & Jack Bruce.
That said, he was around 17 years old at the time & a bit "raw" (probably) for the studio.

Also, a lot of the J-5's recordss were done in LA...guys like Ron Brown probably did more of their records than, say, Jamerson (who definitely did "Darling Dear" from the Third Album).

The Corporation used Wilton Felder. (ABC, Love You Save, I Want You Back)

James Jamerson played on most of the Bobby Taylor produced tracks & "Darling Dear" (First Album & unreleased material). The wiki article is pretty accurate for the first album.

Wilton Felder is playing on "I Want You Back", probably on all of the tracks produced by "The Corporation." I know Ron Brown was used on a lot of stuff, and Tony Newton is playing on "I Wanna Be Where You Are." (Michael solo). One credit that has been widely inaccurate is that Chuck Rainey in playing on "Dancing Machine." It's very possible that he may have played on a demo version, but that is an L.A. bassist named William Salter, who actually played on most of the Dancing Machine album. The part is somewhat rhythmically similar to Chuck's part on "Rock Steady" by Aretha Franklin, so that also fueled the rumor, IMO. To my knowledge, Jamerson is only playing on "Darling Dear" and any of the stuff that Bobby Taylor produced, which can be found on the compilation CD from 1995 entitled "Soulsation." Cd #4 contains a the first batch of ever increasing unreleased material. It's believed that the J-5 recorded somewhere around 300 tracks while at Motown. Roughly 150 have seen the light of day, so that means there's a whole bunch of stuff that we haven't heard.

William Salter? Did not know that.
Salter & Ralph MacDonald (percussionist cum laud) were a songwriting team.
"Where Is The Love" is one their hits.
I have a Ralph MacDonald solo album (Sound Of The Drum) where it's Rainey & Salter (on URB, IIRC) playing bass.
