Yeah it's a fender baritone. Nice sound huh? Can't compete with the EB-3 though.

Tuned E A D G B E but an octave lower than a guitar. Not a Baritone...

Nope, not a baritone. It's a true bass guitar, tuned just like a guitar except one octave lower. Has pickups similar to a Jaguar guitar, and the same bridge/trem as the Jaguar/Jazzmaster (though the saddles for the Bass VI were solid barrels, later used on the Mustang guitar instead of the threaded rod with individual heigth screws the Jag/JM used).

He got it when the guitarist (John McLaughlin I beleive) left the Graham Bond Organisation. It allowed Jack to cover the bass function and also to play some "guitar-like solos". He used it for into the first tour. Just before the tour he had it painted by some people from an artist collective named "The Fool" who also painted Clapton's SG/Les Paul (the psychedelic one that Todd Rundgren owns now). There was a picture of the Bass Vi with the psychedelic paint job inside the album cover for "Wheels of Fire". Jack says the paint never set up and thats why he stopped playing it.

John

Yep -- Bass VI. 30" scale used by George Harrison on "Hey Jude" & John Lennon on "Let It be." Also on "Back in the USSR," by John, I believe.

After he stopped playing the Fender VI, he played some borrowed instruments, bought a Danelectro Longhorn and then the Gibson EB-3. He used the Dano on some songs. I have tried to find out which ones, but have never been able to find out.

I heard Jack play that bass live in April of 1968 in Chicago. He used it for the first part of their set. He switched to his EB3 for the rest of the night. Two completely different sounds

saw a Fender vi on eBay months ago

studied it on wiki,,pretty interesting,,,(but i thought it was a `baritone',maybe my headcold is clouding me up=definatly!)

`paint never set up' probably some old alkyd enamel with no hardener,,get it warm and it would get sticky(remember those cabinets/dresser droors that would do that back in the day?),,thanks for the replys!
