Talking Jack Bruce - Blue Note

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm off to NYC tomorrow with the sole purpose of seeing my idol Jack Bruce at the Blue Note. This is the guy that made me want to play bass after hearing that free form craziness with Cream and then the Supershow video (must see for anyone who is unaware of this gem) when i was about 14.

Has anyone been to the Blue Note before? I bought tickets pretty early so hope i have good seats. I've never been there before so dont know what to expect.

Supershow? You mean that thing with Buddy Guy? Enjoy Jacks show tomorrow night, he's the best, and he and Jamerson are why I play bass.

get there early. seating is first come first served. the line will probably start at least an hour before show time, so if you get there later than that you may get stuck with crappy seats. you will be packed in like sardines

no, you can definately get stuck in a table in the back. the club is set up kind of weird, and while its not huge, there are definately seats in the place that i would not want. ive been there many times

I think it's time to put the bass down...or at least the mic.

I caught them last night at Yoshi's in Oakland. Un.F***ing.Believable! Jack's voice was as strong as it was on the old Cream records, and his playing was amazing. I got there an hour early and was first in line to get in (though they let the people who ate dinner there get first dibs), so we were at a table about 10 feet from Jack. His playing is rock solid. He doesn't overplay at all, and he holds back a lot so that every note he does play carries weight. The rest of the band were amazing, too. They communicated well with each other with just a glance here and there. And they looked like they were really enjoying themselves up there. Besides the regular solos in each song, each member got an extended solo and each one was better than the next.

And since Cindy Blackman's husband lives in the area, he came out and joined them for the last two songs. You may have heard of him. His name is Carlos Santana! They played Sunshine of Your Love and Carlos played it with twice as much feeling as Clapton ever did.

This is the second one of my bass idols I've gotten to see in that room. Last time it was Tony Levin with Terry Bozzio, Alan Holdsworth and Pat Mastaletto.

I was there, second show! I worried a little when the band took so long to enter the stage after being introduced and Jack needed some help putting his bass on.......he seemed confused and a little disoriented. But right away he sang his butt off, one of the greats as a vocalist. As the set went on, his bass playing and particularly tone became more focused. He is such a fluent player, I think he is playing electric bass more from his roots as a cellist/double bassist these days.

Deepest instrumental solos of the evening IMO were by John Medeski, he truly channeled Larry Young. Reid and Black channeled the flame of the Williams/Mahivishnu connection, incredible.

But nobody sings and plays like Jack, and he is a living example of the best getting better with grace.!

I was at the same show. Medeski's last solo (the one where he was playing the synth on top with the organ) was just mind-blowing! How awkward was it when they announced the band, everyone clapped and nobody came out for a while? And then the same thing happened with the encore. I also found the sound mix to be incredibly muddy during the first song, but after that it sounded clear.
