Jack Bruce's birthday today (05/14)

Happy birthday to one of the most important influcence in my musical life. Thanks for "White Room", "Badge", "Letter of Thanks", "Politician", "Hey, Can You Follow", "The Consul at Sunset", etc.

And thanks for your assertion that while the bass has a specific role to fill in music, that doesn't mean one has to fulfill that role in the traditional way all the time.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Bruce. I wish I could give you a gift half as good as the one you gave me - the bass line in Sunshine of Your Love.

I wonder if Camille Paglia, Salon.com columnist knew it was Jack's birthday when she wrote this in her latest piece:

"Finally, we need a pick-me-up after that Donovan dirge. Check this out, one of the seminal influences of my early career: the live version of Cream's "Deserted Cities of the Heart," written by my ego ideal, feisty bassist Jack Bruce. Recorded in 1968, it was released in March 1972 as the opening track on "Live Cream Volume II." It was my final semester of grad school at Yale, and I was still unemployed. (Bennington wouldn't call until May.)

"Deserted Cities of the Heart" blew me away. It felt like anthem, hymn, and manifesto all in one. It was everything I wanted to embody in my writing, the nascent "Sexual Personae," which was in process as a doctoral dissertation: power, structure, vision, and yet mad improvisation. Even now, the competitive cacophony of the break in "Deserted Cities" leaves me breathless. What virtuoso musicians are at work here -- drummer Ginger Baker as well as legendary lead guitarist Eric Clapton and the pugnacious Bruce, whose noble, robust voice soars over it all. Of course they fought like cats, and the combo was short-lived. But 40 years later, Cream's bold artistry still inspires. "

The man's amazing. We almost lost him a while back, and thank God he's still around to celebrate more birthdays.

One of my earliest and most ongoing bass inspirations.
Thanks for all you've given us, Jack, and may you be around for many more years to share more.

Yea we sure did almost loose him. I read somewhere that at the time he accepted Clapton's invitation for the reunion he actually couldn't speak let alone sing. I'll tell ya when I saw them at MSG Bruce's voice filled the place floor to ceiling. Big as ever.

Adding my best birthday wishes. I think he was the most important part of Cream and his solo albums after Cream are some of my all time favorites and very under appreciated.

Happy Birthday to one of Scotland's best exports, the most memorable bassist who took the bass to a level unheard of in the 60's!

Jack, this Owl thanks you for much inspiring listening and more!

A belated happy one to one of the most ultimate bassists in the soundtrack of my child/teenagehood. "White Room", "Badge", and "Sunshine of Your Love" were not only among the very first classic rock songs I could ever recognize before I was seven, but still amongst the classics/my faves I will never, ever get sick of.

Thirding the repeating of this.

Doesn't penultimate simply mean second last?

Oh well, totally agree with the point of your post.

God Bless Jack Bruce! He is the one and only musician that can literally send shivers down my spine with his combination of intense vocals and insanely creative bass playing. How can one man have so much talent? I am grateful to have seen him play live twice. Hope he's around for many years to come.

Oh, smack...

In all honesty, I didn't realize that penultimate meant 'second last'...I've always thought it meant THE ultimate or 'be all, end all'. *blushes*

But, that said, my intention/point was/is certainly that Bruce is one of the best of the best...and definitely not second best.

I didn't know this was his birthday. This happens to be one of the most important days of the year for me, for another reason... interesting.

B-Day!

Happy Birthday Jack! How old is he now? Imagine the influence this guy has had on bass and bassists. My God, he was the first bassist ever to not double the guitarist. He was the quintessential inspiration to Geezer Butler, among countless others famous and not. Jack is THE man!!!! Dude has probably forgotten more about bass than I will ever know. The title to his video says it all, 'The Cream of Cream'.
