There are pix floating around the web of jaco playing a Musicman Earthwood ABG (fretted)and I think that there is one of him playing a fretted 5 string Guild pilot.

The pics showing him with a Cort Gene Simmons Axe bass have been proven to be fakes, however.

If Jaco was still with us, I am sure he would have switched to playing a 6 string.
The added range, more natural harmonics, more chord voicing possibilities.
I know he would be playing an ERB.

I've never seen any photos of Jaco with a 5-string Pilot, but Guild did a whole series of ads with him endorsing their Pilot and the Guild/Hartke speaker cabinets. It was a black fretless Pilot. I have one of the dealer posters in my garage. I was a Guild dealer from '77 - '88. There was apparently also some video Guild shot of Jacob and Jerry Jemmott jamming at a club when Jack Bruce stopped by. I hounded my sales Rep for two years to get me SOMETHING from that, but Guild changed hands and Larry Hartke went to Samson so the project died.

Except that at the time he said he didn't see the need for a five- or six-string bass. I'm m very careful about categorically stating what someone I don't personally know would or would not do had they lived.
