Bingo.

I was reading the Jaco biography about two years ago, and a guy asked me what I was reading about. I explained it, and then he commented that Jaco looked just like James Franco.

The thing about a movie like this is that the principle characters would have to be filmed playing music and NOT looking foolish. Much as it is with baseball movies, an actor who can't "Do" will look stupid faking it...

So you cast Johnny Depp or James Franco or whomever... they best get some bass lessons...

then gain, Keaneau Reeves already plays bass in his fine band "DogStar"...

Can you imagine - Neo as Jaco?

Depp plays bass already IIRC and can look a lot like Jaco IMO.

Edit:

Have johnk make some '62 Js for him to hold and let his hair grow out and he'd do fine. I'm thinking Bobby Vega should do the bass parts: YouTube - Bobby Vega.

Mmm not sure about it... Keaneau can't act and Jaco was a great showman :-)

coolet5, this is exactly what work is FOR! good casting.

for the downtown coke-addled nyc "7th ave south" gig days, how 'bout
rainn wilson as mike stern
don cheadle as hiram bullock
ricky gervais as mike brecker (not accurate i know, but i can't think of anyone else with mike's look at the moment)

johnny depp might be getting juuuust a hair too old to pull off the "florida flash" days, but maybe not. he and franco would make excellent choices, however.

doesn't one of his sons play bass?
Why not use him to play his dad?

so would you do this like "Bird" - him at the end, reflecting on his life... or just a section of his life?

Felix, one of the twins, does play bass (and quite well: YouTube - Victor Wooten & Felix Pastorius) but you'd need to have some serious acting skills to play Jaco which is why I'd pick Depp.

and please, not Keanu, unless the role calls for just a blank stare.
plus, his DogStar band sounds like DogPoop. Or they did when I heard them years ago.

i doubt anyone would want to play their father as a coke head maniac.

and besides, johnny depp would get more people to see it and love jaco afterwards

I'm surprised there hasn't been a documentary about him.

No pompous H-wood types telling us why Jaco was great (which has somehow become the MTV/VH1 documentary format), but the people in his life with photo and vid.

Ken Burns type of docu, or as Clint Eastwood did with "Straight, No Chaser" about Monk.

my guess is that, if Hollywood can't get a Miles Davis movie off the ground (there have been numerous efforts), then a Jaco movie is never going to fly.
