Jaco's sound

Sign in to disble this ad
have searched but there are alot of posts with 'Jaco " in it.
Sounds like his basses were processed with some chorus and or delay ( doubling)
If any knows the exact set up he used would be appreciated.
BTW, with all due great respect, I am not into being a Jaco clone player but that sound is useful for some tracks i am scoring.

I'm sure someone can come along with more help, but I know sometimes when he's playing harmonics it sounds like he's using chorus, but is really just playing two harmonics together, either the same note or an octave apart. At least thats how Portrait of Tracy sounds to me

Portrait of Tracy, I believe, was played entirely with harmonics. Jaco's "chorus" sound was harmonics.

And the delay thing? I don;t recall where I read it, but Jaco didn't use a pedal. He played out of two Acoustic stacks, one wired to play slightly behind the other. You could just get a delay and then zero in on the exact time difference though.

Alright ,
I'll try dialing in my Dig Delay and even use a second amp. It does indeed sound like a DD on most trks.
I knew bout the harmonics technique stuff for years. It was not that I was talking about.

He often used MXR delay units in a chorus-type setting, they are also what he used for looping in Slang

"Portrait of Tracy" <--- not all harmonics.

Pretty much most of his work was done before stomp-box chorus pedals were common. It's the MXR digital delay, one amp dry and one with the delay. Add some modulation and you've got chorusing. And "Portrait of Tracy" indeed has fretted natural notes, but no chorus on the studio track from his first album.
