i can't find much at all regarding the musicians on this track--from what i did find, it seems the bassline may be borrowed from another song? anyone have any info who might have recorded it, how it was done, etc.?

i really really dig the sound of the bassline on this one

...that's why it sounds so infectious--it's de la soul 'ring ring ring'

the jaheim mix has the bass really out front, sounds good

NOT De La Soul.
See the Whatnauts from the '80's "Help Is On The Way"
Then the Fatback Band "Act Like You Know". also from the 80's
THEN De La Soul = SAMPLE

very fun bassline to play, but not as easy as it sounds to play consistently...

Thanks Sounbwoy!

Do you know who played the original bassline?

after a bit of listening, i remember this song from way back, on the radio in my dad's pickup when he used to take me to school early in the morning...man, there was so much good stuff on AM radio back then...i'm glad to have rediscovered this with the help!

I don't know who the Whatnauts bassist is, but the group was from Baltimore. DWBass aka "The Funkfather" is VERY knowledgeable about this genre and may be able to give you more info. There's some stuff on line and the originals are also on You Tube.

The nice thing about the Whatnauts version is how modern it sounds as opposed to the Fatback version. That said, I like the Fatback version more :-)

Since they didn’t write their own songs, studio skills and a hot live act were essential in getting others to craft material for them. Michael Watson (guitar), Curtis McTeer (bass) and Donald McCoy (drums) buoyed a sizzling Whatnauts’s band that was more advanced than All Platinum’s original house band. George Kerr used them in the studio on the Whatnauts’ and his own recordings (remember ‘3 Minutes 2 Hey Girl”); which is why the Whatnauts’ recordings are more polished than early tracks of their label mates, the Moments.
Found the above info online. That is a killer bassline and even tougher to play throughout an entire song. It's like taking a constant solo!

+1 This is a old school tune. The line is funky but tricky (at first) to play.

The Whatnauts version is a little trickier. He's more consistent and uses more octaves in almost every bar at some parts, and is for lack of a better term at the moment; "fancier".
The Fat Larry version is easier to play, but I like it simply because the bass is louder (imho) even tho he doesn't get down like Curtis did in the Whatnauts version.
