Even though I totally respect James Brown, I never was a huge fan, however, his rythmn section is always awesome, especially his Bass player (who gives me fits when I try to figure out his lines). Here's someone with more patience than me (at least figuring out funk).

All of that was tight, but I really liked the bass on the short version they did of "Out Of Sight" at the beginning of the clip. I checked out more of this guys stuff, all very smooth playing.

Is this a TB'r?

He had many bassists over the years. All of them helped define and push funk and soul bass to new places, hand in hand with the equally amazing drummers who passed through his bands.

Judging from the time period, could be Fred Thomas, Bootsy Collins, or Bernard Odum. All of them were really funky, and I find it hard telling one from another during their James Brown years.

It was probably either Bernard Odum or Sam Thomas. Country Kellum also a possibility. Definitely not Bootsy. He joined up in 1970.

I was fortunate enough to catch him live a couple of times, and what the band did during some songs was to just groove for several minutes while James danced around the stage and use that part of his showmanship. You're assesment is right on - one of the best rhythm sections I have EVER heard. It must have surely been a pride-thing with the "Band of Renown". Every song was a treat at their shows - whew!

Tim Drummond also did a nice stint with JB during Browns heyday in the mid-late 60's.

Yeah - JB's grooves always give me the chills. I've also strapped on my bass and tried to funk along with some of his popular tunes, and there's a lot of bass trickery going on there! Even songs like "Sex Machine" have a lot of tricky notes and rhythmic suggestions that you won't notice until you try to recreate them. Some really sophisticated groove and mood going on in JB's songs, unlike some of the other funksters whose bassists had a less subtle, more balls-to-the-wall feeling.

Incredible bassist, I can't believe he isn't a household name (at least in a household that includes a bassist...).

He played on one of my favorite JB numbers, Licking Stick, with its perfect bassline:
