James Jamerson Live: What's Going On / What's Happening Brother

Thank you youtube: 9 minutes of Jamerson live with Marvin Gaye, 1973. It has some good shots of James playing, which I haven't seen much of myself. Enjoy.

BTW & IMHO --> this just proves to me that Jamerson sounds the same not matter what the setup, live, studio, whatever, -- that tone is coming from him and that Precision.

My HERO reading charts?

I'm crushed and mortified. I just watched the OP's JJ youtube video , only to see James looking down the whole time reading charts. I always thought that all those melodic, flowing bass lines were of his own composition. I played in a Motown band for 8 yrs and never knew this fact. This does'nt diminish my respect for him, but it means that someone gets the credit for those beautiful bass lines. Did you notice how he played with his fingers almost inside the pickup cover. I wonder why he did'nt just pull the cover off?

Why do you think someone else wrote those bass lines? Guys read lines they've written plenty of times, I'm sure he didn't remember exactly what he played on the many records that he did only a few takes on if that.

The charts may have been only chord charts.

No egg on face, basslinejam - thanks for reminding us.
This was the first I noticed that JJ uses a floating thumb, with his second finger resting on the pup cover. Cool! Makes me even more glad to be a floating thumb player

I can remember 25 yrs of old bass lines

Seems funny how I can remember 25yr old bass lines without any chord charts. I can remember the bass lines to every original song I ever contributed to. I don't remember Willie Weeks reading any charts while he is playing Motown, Doobie Brothers, Country. Although I have seen Will Lee reading charts while on Letterman. How many years of bass lines were there in the Motown era I wonder?

He may have been reading The Playboy Advisor...

Also, JJ recorded on literally thousands of songs. Chord charts would have been the safe thing to have. Final thought - I see a lot of "music stands on the bandstand are unprofessional" posts here. I think that in that generation, music stand on the bandstand showed that you had class and could read.

Cool Again, Truly Incredible

I watched this video and listened for Jamerson while the camera was on Marvin and in the second half (I couldn't see James) I thought he had changed to an upright but he was still playing his P! Again, the most remarkable touch EVER!

It was a medley. Maybe the transition was tricky, or there was some change of notes/arrangement that he wanted to be sure he didn't miss. Maybe it was just a security blanket. Maybe he believed what I believe, that a chart is better than a trainwreck.

If I'd ever gotten the chance to play with Marvin Gaye, I'd have taken every precaution imaginable to prevent mistakes!
