I think it's correct; there is a certain lack of note definition on the faster runs that sounds very un-Jamerson like to me. I haven't compared it to the CD but my ears tell me enough, and also this is the first I've heard of that track existing soloed from the original recordings.
If I'm wrong then I will have a whole omelette's worth of egg on my face, of course.
A great clip in any case, thanks for posting it! |

I've seen it claimed to be the isolated master track. I'm with One Drop I'd like to know if this is the original track or infact James Junior replicating the track? I don't know?
God Bless R.

It's definitely Jamerson, not his son or anyone else, and it is from Marvin's track. |

Motown engineers had a way of softening passages so that overly-distorted notes wouldn't stick out during a song. That accounts for Jamerson's lines sounding fuzzier solo-ed than they do on the original.
If anyone is in any doubt, track down a copy of the deluxe, 2-cd edition of What's Going On, and cue up the "Rhythm and Strings Mix" of the track. In fact, I'd encourage anyone who likes the song to listen to that version. You'll hear things a lot clearer after that. I may even post a clip of it online when I get home tonight. |

Perhaps that accounts for the lack of note definition? |

I've got the Deluxe Edition, and that version of What's Going On is stunning. When those strings kick in, it never fails to leave me completely stunned.
And yes, it is definitely Jamerson.

ac1710, thanks for that link, I don't know how I missed it before. I'm going to watch it all later tonight when I'm 'in the mood'. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
