Agreed! Video version of Space Cowboy all the way. For some other amazing tunes from their 2nd (and IMHO best) disc, check out "Stillness In Time" (all-time fave), "Scam", "Journey to Arnhemland", and "Just Another Story".

Ok I've had a listen to the 'video'version of space cowboy (thanks Funkzfly) and I dig Stuart's take on the tune. I still prefer the album version though. It's got a kinda Jamerson melodic groove through the progression type thing happening which I'm totally into. Maybe I've just heard the album version so many more times that I'm just used to it that way. I'll just need to listen to the video version a few more. Cheers

Wow! You learn something new every day!

For years I've been citing Zender's bass playing on Space Cowboy as the skill level I aspire to...only to discover today, via my trusty friend, Google, that it wasn't him at all.

Not a probleml though...Whoever played on the album version of that track has a serious groove under his fingers. Makes sense if it's Randy Hope Taylor, as the line has an awesome laid-back melodic feel to it.

@ BenHack, glad you liked the tune! I'm completely with you, I really prefer the album version.

@ rymix, I think the album version has got Randy Hope Taylor's style stamped all over it. Incidentally, did you know he's working as a London Bus Driver at the moment? I think he got tired of session work, he's been in the game for a long time...the only band he's in at the moment is a London based Gospel band, still playing through his Edens and his Aerodyne Jazz. What a hero

NO!

That's either terribly sad or unbelievably cool...I can't decide which.

And btw, thank's for screwing up my daily commute! From now on I'll be scrutineering the bus drivers on my trudge from Liverpool Street every morning

You have a copy of that album?!?! I've been waiting like 4 years to hear it! Where on earth did you get it? The only information I've found anywhere on it is from StuZender.com telling us how amazing it is and that Simon (or whoever wrote the article) won't share it with us!

/me takes a deep breath....

He got it from me. I can't tell you where I got it, trust me on this. Email me. I made Simon promise not to share it. Stu wasn't too happy with me for a while.

Once again Stu rocks! And anyone who saw the "that sound, amazes me" thread in basses let's get this thread to 8 pages.

I still don't get how ANYONE could prefer the album version, but it IS an opinion. Maybe its like a groove thing.... i prefer Stu's melodic groove so much and everything in my other post on this subject.

@ Disco_Gee, yeh, you'd have to enquire with Simon who might be able to get permission from Stuart to put it up, though I'm not promising anything. I'll see what I can do...AZUR did some great stuff, it would be a shame to not get their stuff heard.

@ rymix, Randy's doing something he actually enjoys. it's not necessarily that he can't find work, he's just taking a break and enjoying a different job...taking the quiet life

What kind of bass does that other guy play on the album version?

It's so hard to say, because no one can even be sure who's even playing on the album version, let alone what Bass they're using.

If I'm right and it's Randy Hope Taylor playing on the album, his rig will be Eden or maybe SWR. Basswise, Randy has used Fender Jazz basses for much of his career with Incognito, and even a Larry Graham Moon Bass, as well as a Surf Green Sei Jazz Bass and more recently his one and only bass has been a Fender Aerodyne...my guess would be a Fender Jazz.

Correct on the basses, and he also had a 1 p'up Modulus as well.

Yeh, sorry Woodchuck I forgot about his Flea Bass...that gets me actually, Randy sounded better when he was just using his Fenders.

Incidentally, I reckon his playing on Jamiroquai's new album is tight...specifically Starchild. Randy commented that he always likes to use 5 strings in the studio, but 4 strings live, so presumably that was his Modulus he was using on Dynamite maybe.
