So today, for the first time in over a decade, I will see the ORIGINAL Jane's Addiction perform live in Albuquerque, NM.
The first time I saw this band was their very last show as the original line up. I had just moved to Hawaii and they were playing at the Aloha Tower.
I must have been only 14 at the time and hadn't even started playing bass.
Eric Avery had a very large influence on me when I had actually started playing. I found his bass lines to be original, hypnotic and fit the groove so well for that band. A perfect rock bassist in my mind. Nothing amazingly flashy, but still would stand out quite prominently in the band.
The relentlessly driving bass line locked in with the drums on Ain't No Right blew my mind. Avery, to me, also came up with the most beautiful and melodic music with only a few notes. Songs like Three Days and Summertime rolls showed me you can say so much while playing so little.
Ritual De Lo Habitual was the first album I learned in it's entirety.
That being said, Eric Avery gets my vote for one of the TOP 5 most underrated rock bassists ever.
What do you guys think? |

I have and am probably the only one in the world who likes the Deconstruction album. That was kinda Eric's thing. He reminds me of a nervous Peter Murphy vocally. Very epic sounding. They're playing here soon w/ NIN. Hope I can make it! |

Since Avery was such a big deal to me at that time, I rushed out and purchased the album as soon as I heard about it. Of course I dig it.
Living in Hawaii was such a musical awakening. I learned so much about music living out there for those few years. Of course with having Radio Free Hawaii and their eclectic playlist, I got to hear music I would have never discovered on my own.
I was too young at the time to go to The Wave. I remember hearing about it though. I lived on the other side of the island in Kailua. Well, actually KMCAS. |

A few years back I got to see Jane's play in Amsterdam to about 300 people in a small intimate club, tickets were $25 at the door and it was amazing. Shared a jager with Perry, Dave fell offstage (monitor tilted forward on him) but was ok, and two days later we had to listen to his yoga instructor at the airport bitch and complain as Dave fired him (probably for being a complete jerk).
Small world, great show....a bit smokey in the venue if I remember.....not that I remember. |

Definitely one of the most underrated bassists of all time.

I saw NIN with Bowie, so I skipped this tour.
I have to pick my shows, with wife, kid, credit cards
for gear, etc.
Have fun and enjoy!!!
