Jason Newstead grooves

Sign in to disble this ad
I've really enjoyed listening to some of Jason's basslines off of their albums. I know some bassists don't like Jason Newstead but I think he's come up with some good grooves, My friend of Misery, King Nothing, God that failed etc... What are some of your favorite jason newstead basslines?

Jason is one of my top players, my favourite lines of his are "my friend of misery", "the god that failed", "creeping death" (i know that was Cliff but i love the way Jason did it). Out of Metallica i think the bass on "metalshock" is excellent (from doomsday for the deciever, when he was in flotsam & jetsam) and "cryin' shame" from echobrain.

I play my friend in misery a lot to get a feel for the sound of any new bass in my hands great line a definite ATF.

Most Jason nay say stuff is due to his living in the shadow of Cliff Burton. Real Bassists can appreciate the style he brought to Metallica, while the ones who don't like him are likely immature Cliff strap hangers. Just my .02

I believe Jason was a perfect choice for'em at that time. I just wish they bumped up his bass in the mix alittle more. Well. OK. Alot more. Cliff definately was awesome and innovative, Jason was solid and in the pocket, and Robert is a Cliff revisited(but with his own flavor, only if James/Lars let'em do HIS thing. I mean, seriously, Suicidal, Infectious, Ozzy, BLS, now 'tallica!!!). Yes, they were/are all different in their own rite, but all kicked the same amount of arse!

Would you believe "The Beer Song" off the Binge and Purge live album.

I just love that ditty for some reason.

Songwise Misery and God That Failed always catch my ear. I'm not familiar with his work outside of Metallica, except with SuperNova because I watched in on the telly.

I am a die hard Cliff fan but I give credit where it is due, and Jason is definitely due some. I actually prefer the galloping that Jason brought to "Battery" over Cliff's straight notes. And Jason's Creeping Death is better too. King Nothing is my favorite Jason bassline. But, of course, that will change from time to time.

Jason is awesome, and it's pretty cool to be able to hear his isolated bass tracks on youtube (especially those from AJFA!). He's ripping that bass and his tone has always been... *drool*

One of my fave all time players. And he could cop anything Cliff played previously, which is why they hired him... Most morans tend to forget that pretty obvious/simple fact about Jason. You don't hire someone who can't play your music. I much prefer his interpretation of "Call of Kthulu" actually.

He actually has lots of cool stuff on Load and ReLoad. Until It Sleeps, King Nothing (Ftw), Bleeding Me and Outlaw Torn are all awesome and have kickass Spectorz toan.

Live he was the absolute best at backup vocals. Cliff only did backups on studio CDs and Trujillo flat out sucks. He made their live show, which is their bread and butter anyway, infinitely better during his time.

What I never got was why he played solely with a pick with 'tallica. He can play with his fingers, if you look at a lot of his solos during shows he fingers....quite well.

And his tone......oh man. Second to Rex Brown he's got the beastliest tone in all of metal.

id like to actually hear his lines for ''...and justice for all'', ultimately my favourite normal (ill clarify in a moment) metallica album. apparently he wrote some pretty nice lines that were subsequently buried in the mix. the mix is the only negative point about that album, real shame.

i still rate Cliff more, partly cause i prefered his tone, but Newstead is great and has to be one of the most unfairly maligned players ever due to metallica diehards hating him just cause he got kicked out. i liked his backing vox too.

and he was on S & M, which was my very first exposure to 'tallica and thus my absolute top album by them. probably an unpopular choice but i love it.

It's a great song, but you could never accuse 'My Friend of Misery' of having groove...

Jason sets up a cool, greasy groove in 'Devil's Dance' but the song soon descends into banality sadly.

Oh and '2x4', probably Metallica's deepest groove.

a lot of the basslines on the load/reload albums have a pretty significant amount of groove in'em, IMO. I dig the little slap bass part he plays in "the cure"

If you mean the jam bit after the justice medley, that is actually "born under a bad sign" by Albert King (i think).

He was much better for Metallica than Cliff was IMO, he really locked up that bottom end; both tonally and playing wise. He was amazing, they made a real error of judgement in letting him go!

Jason is one severely underrated bassist, mostly because he lived in Cliff's shadow. But like everyone said, he had to learn Cliff's basslines and be able to play them in order to be in Metallica, so he couldn't be a bad bassist.

Jason was the guy who originally inspired me to pick up the bass. Nowadays I have different idols, but he will always be the guy who got me started

Btw, Jason was not kicked out of Metallica$h, he flat out walked. That's why the Metallica$h die-hards like to rant on him but that's b/c they're ignorant and stupid.

I also love the Rob> Jason bit, but how many lines of Rob's does anyone know or that are even memorable?? O, wait... I count a whole 0. Same goes for his time with Ozzy.

As for Jason, I think he's great. He brought a lot of flavor to Metallica, and in general he just seems like a really good guy who knows his stuff. He plays some really sweet stuff on Doomsday for the Deceiver, and he is LOUD on that album too.

So what are some classic, great Rob lines w/ Jayemzzz and Larzzz? They can't even write songs anymore, much less have anyone else doing something worthwhile.
