Around this time in 2001, Jason Newsted left Metallica. Everyone post something that you'd like to see him remembered for in Metallica.

Heres what I have:

He is my all time favorite bassist and biggest influence, pretty much the reason I picked up the bass for the first time 4 months ago. I loved Jason in Metallica and IMO if he was allowed to have more say then we wouldnt have seen the crap that was load and reload. Rock On Newsted!!

The reason I wanted to play bass. Plus his insane headbanging.

Did he die? Why does everyone act like he STOPPED making music after Metallica. His musical adventures just began with Metallica. When he split he started several projects, joined ****ING VOIVOD!!, joined Ozzy's band, started his own label helping up and coming artists. Metallica was holding him back from taking over the musical world.

Bravo to Jason for getting the guts to leave the band that TORMENTED HIM because they are such immature pricks. And Bravo to Jason for having such an amazing musical career, and if you truely admire Jason as a bassist/human being (I know I do), you should be proud of him leaving too.

He was better in Flotsam & Jetsam. Listen to the bass work on Doomsday and you'll see what I mean. He should get back together with those guys and really rock it again.

Metallica died,When "Clifford Lee Burton"died. As for jason i respect him as a player, but really nothing else matter's. As for metallica they need go on a time warp and go back to 1983 and play the style that made them, but that will be hard to do with out cliff who was the theory man who schooled the other members.........rip cliff

Dude, we all know he wen't on to make other music. But your missing the point of the thread. This is to remember him BEING in Metallica, since it was around this time in 2001 when he left. And also, I am proud of him leaving, it was an excellent decision on his part, but you have to also remember, Metallica was a huge part of his career, 14 years infact...

He sucked in Metallica -- not by his own will, most likely. He rocks in Voivod. Hard.

Cliff or nothing. I'm the first in this thread to say it, but not the last.

Jason is the Metallica bassist imo. Cliff warmed the seat but things were better once he was out of the way. St Anger was a fantastic record though, you can feel the rage and regret pouring through as Hetfield realizes he has pushed Jason away.

Jason should get back with them, that would be ace. And Max should reform Sepultura, that would be great!

He would have been a big hit if it weren't for the heavy downstrokes...
But he's stage presence is unmatched

His heavy downstrokes are fantastic, this is Heavy Metal we're talking about, not a walk among the daisies with fluffy puppies and gentle hummingbirds

I'd like to see him remembered for being a substantially more gifted musician than he was ever allowed to be in Metallica. I'd like to see people recognise his pre and post Metallica career which, in my opinion, give a far greater impression of what Jason Newsted is really about than Metallica's slide into mediocrity.

Since he left Metallica he's put out two Echobrain albums, two Voivod albums toured them and toured with Ozzy. Metallica, on the other hand, have released Stanger. Case closed!

I don't think too many people bothered to respond to this quite correctly. The main things that I remember about him in Metallica are 1) his warm, thick, ballsy Ampeg sound that made me reassess what a good metal bass sound was, and 2) the crazy energy and sneering presence he had, both on the AJFA tour (I saw them on his birthday! Only time I ever saw a guy toast the audience with a sneer while having happy birthday sung to him... how metal) and in their videos.

He's a great musician, and apparently a pretty good guy too.

When I saw them about 14 years ago (on tour with Suicidal Tendencies), i was lucky enough to have a backstage pass. Jason was the only one who took the time to talk with the fans. He is truly a nice person. I respected him even more after that day.

Sell out? We sell out every night?

Nice. I remember when Justice came out. It was heavy even if you couldn't hear the bass. I had come off about a year and a half of listening to Master of Puppets everyday. Then I see the 2 of One video where Lars says they don't like the cut version, but they put it out anyway. That to me was the beginning of the end. And then the rest of their collection came out. What a buch of creativeless pop nothing, except for 1 or 2 songs.

Of course Jason really was just James' and Lars' **tch for 14 years.

Thank God we now have Trivium and Lamb of God.
