Let's see:
Metallica - check (he quit right in the middle of a recording session. Nice.....)
Ozzy - check
Voivod - check
Rockstar SuperNova - check

Sorry but there seems to be a pattern here....

c'mon Jason, man up and see something through already - you've already gotten more chances than most and I can't be the only guy to question your reliability and fortitude.
His 'excuse' for leaving Metallica was that they treated him like ****. Completely valid reason in my eyes.

He was only contracted to play with Ozzy through those Ozzfest and canadian tours. Jason was just filling in (since voivod was on the tour anyways) until Ozzy could find a more permanent bassist.

He had to back out of the SuperNova tour because of his neck/shoulder injury (he had some pretty serious surgery for it). Same thing with Voivod now. His injuries are pretty permanent at this point and I think Jason just isn't comfortable performing on stage unless he can be there 100%, able to run around and headbang like a madman. Isn't possible anymore. Jason isn't going to tour with SuperNova or Voivod or anyone if he would be restricted to just standing there and calmly playing the notes.

I'm a huge Jason fan but even if you're not, it would seem to me that Jason could only come off as a truly genuine and honest guy. Much more so than James or Lars at least. That's how I've always felt about him anyways.

I've seen Jason with Voivod, back on a Sepultura tour a few years ago. Made me a huge fan. He is incredible onstage. I think you're right; he doesn't want to play out on a full tour if he has to always limit how much he can really get into it.

And yes, he didn't "flake out" on Metallica as the previous dude said. He was with that band for more than a decade, tolerating crap that I maybe would have put up with for a couple albums, given that much money, but certainly not 14 years.

Thats not what i heard... though i might be wrong. On one of tallicas dvd (some kins of monster i believe) james did say that jason asked for his job back and they said no. not sure if this is true or if i can even recall i correctly but that what i thought. Anyway great bassist, one of my biggest idols, and a damn good replacement for Cliff!!! well never forget his shows and contributions to music and hope that this thing about retirering is all BS!!!

I`d call that "seeing something through"

I think you might be recalling some kind of monster a bit differently than I do... from what I remember when they all started doing counselling etc etc they went and saw jason playing in a small club as way of extending the white flag out a bit and making up for past history (obviously worked or he wouldn't have played with them for hall of fame?)

don't see anywhere where this could occur as jason never looked back (was doing other bands straight after metallica because he needed the creative output) and they pretty much had trujillo signed for a million dollars on the spot a few months later...

I admire jason, thought got very restricted in tallica but watching the cunning stunts dvd he has the best stage presence (and is a nutter in bass solo's like bashing his head against his bass hehe), think his stage presence is something that cannot be replaced

side story: I too have seen injured musicians keep playing on, local band chick singer busted her ankle... sang the songs on a stool for 6 months after,... but they were all less 'rocked out' than the first show she didn't need to sit down and everything was back to crazy rock n roll... if this was the case then I can certainly see why he wouldn't want to go play half enthusiastic...

You know, I remember getting a my BP in the mail with Jason on the cover - - as I recall, it said "Is Jason Newstead bass's most insane genius" or something to that effect.

That's when I decide to not renew my subscription.

If Jason has hung 'em up - good on him. I hope he's rich. Filthy rich. Money, I respect.

But as a bassist?

Puh-leeze...

Magazines tend to over exaggarate, but he is pretty awesome. If you doubt it, listen to this:

I like Newstead, I think he's okay. But that S&M Call of Ktulu is not the be all, end all of bass playing. Sounds like someone going bananas with a pick. You can't hear the wah, and distortion which make it (IMO) just okay. I like his bass parts more in "My Friend Of Misery", "The God That Failed", and "King Nothing". I think those songs showcase the kind of bassist he is. Solid.
I'm glad they got Rob, he's more of a bass player's bassist, I think.

Too bad...I think BP is an excellent read and Jason is a killer player. To each his own, I guess...
