Anyone know what effects Jason was running for his distortion, particularly during the Black album? Or did most of his tone come from the ampeg heads?

I know that his distortion was an EHX Big Muff and his Wah was Morley. This may have been a carry over from Cliff's sound that Jason tried to replicate to stay true to the original recordings. He later added a phase shifter, I read somewhere, but not sure which kind.

So most of what you hear is the Big Muff?? He must have had alot of dry signal mixed in or not much added with it. I've heard a lot of stuff with Big Muffs and didn't care for the fuzz.

Example of what I've got in my head is the beginning of The God That Failed

The only thing I've ever found,at least on youtube that produces a very similar tone is the ibanez PD7 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nR_6oM3ijFg

There's distortion in Jason's sound on the Black Album? I never noticed that.

Jason's sound on the black album is about as complex as rocket science man IF you wanna nail it right on 100%. He and Bob Rock went through all sorts of different bass and guitar amp's and configurations of both in order to achieve it. Notice each song sort of has an unique bass sound to them, although they all have the "Newsted trademark". But he's been using Ampeg SVT's ever since he could afford them, so I bet you wouldn't go wrong with one of those.

It's one hell of a tone, eargasm coming right up:

'Roam: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5x4UshgDfA

And Nothing Else Matters (notice how even though it's very different, it still sounds like "his tone"): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qhONSUH3kY

The tone he has in roam is ridiculous.
