What kind of bass does Jay Bentley from Bad Religion play? Is it a custom made bass since it has no pots (even volume)?

He plays two precisions that he has had for years, IIRC. Also, he seems to use Ampeg most of the time. That one seems like a '51 P reissue, so he might have a larger herd than I've seen him with. Always seems to play P basses though.

Yeah, he plays P-basses. Got that classic SoCal punk rock Fender sound that he basically invented. I've seen him with both single coil P pickups and split style pickups.

At NAMM I got to shoot the breeze with him and, regardless of what he plays onstage these days, every studio Bad Religion cut is recorded with the same P bass he used to take on the road. I believe it is a 78.

Not off-hand, but it reminds me of the Schecter DeLeo bass, which was basically like a 50s style P with a P/J configuration. Maybe a custom shop model with no knobs?

He's played a black USA Schecter tele bass live for years and it's gotten so beat up from touring that they offered to make him another one.

It's basically a Deleo with a tele neck.

the black schecter is a very early 80's (maybe 79?) that i picked up around 1994.
the white one is a schecter neck (bought on ebay) on a mahogany body made by andrew buscher in 2003.
all the albums since 1988's "suffer" have been recorded with a 1978 fender p-bass.

Welcome Jay!

No pots? Is that because they would never survive or just no need for them?

Wow, you've only had that white bass since 2003? You're a good relic-er

yeah, i just realized one day that i never turn down on stage, and the eq from the amp is far superior to a tone pot, so... out they went.
i think the neck was $190 us... a good deal!! it had old tuner screw holes that were off center, but we just filled them in. the body was made by andrew in the shape of a 1978 telecaster. i think he found the wood, a big chunk of mahogany, by a railroad track. (seriously..)
factually, i didn't start playing the bass as my #1 live til 2004... the black one was pristine when i got it...*sigh* oh well, they're meant to be played...

I gotta tell you, I get a serious boner over that white bass. First off, it looks like a Tele. And the color of the mahogany where your pick gouged the front makes it look like it's blood spattered. Or is that actual blood?

Regardless, I really want that bass. For some reason I keep coming back to that bass over all the pictures of basses on here. The wear on it is like nothing I've seen before. And it's got this look like it's indestructible. But some hardcore Bad Religion fan will probably offer you way more money for it than I ever would. I like your music but I'm not hardcore a fan enough to pay a few grand for it.

thanks jimmy, i won´t sell it though...
the top wear from my wrist brace is the mahogany, the bottom splatter is blood. sorry.

i use blue steel custom lights, have used dáddario´s on earlier records (´88 through 94ish).
also, try the dimarzio p-bass replacement pick up.

Well, my loss is the punk rock world's gain. Besides, I play with Bowzer from Sha Na Na, and he'd probably get all creeped out over the blood. I guess I'll just have to make do with my 79 Precision. Poor me

Awesome basses, that's how my Blackbird is kind of. No pots, just an on/off toggle switch! I want to mod my other thunderbird to be the same way as well eventually...

How's the new record sound Jay? Always been a fan of your basslines!
