Jazz [Fusion] with a Pick?

Sign in to disble this ad
I was listening to some old Jean-Luc Ponty of mine, and I noticed that Tom Fowler was playing with a pick. That's pretty weird IMO. I don't care that he does, because Tom Fowler is a pretty awesome player. Anyways, who are some otehr popular guys who play Jazzy stuff with a pick? Is this a common practice?

hmmm that woulda never crossed my mind.. IMO i dont think it would sound to good--except if it was a heavier rock-jazz fusion type of thing, but even still, you cant get that middy goodness that get with fingers and middy goodness is essential to jazz, i think at least.

Yeah, I agree. Tom Fowler manages to pull it off, or so it seems. It has more of an edge to it, even though I can pretty much do it with my fingers.

Check out the songs "Polyfolk Dance" and "Lost Forest" to see what i'm talkin about.

Andy West leads to his 'replacement' of sorts...Jerry Peek of the Steve Morse Band.
Peek is on the 1st 2 SMB releases. He was a Fusion monster, not sure why things didn't take off for him.

Wolfgang Scmidt from Passport and Billy Cobham did some damage with a pick.

Shh! I think he's here, and might hear you!

Agree, a great player.
