Michael Henderson with Miles Davis, if I remember correctly.

PS Tim Landers with Billy Cobham's Glass Menagerie.

I thought Monk played a Jazz bass?

How about Rick Laird?

Didn't Paul Jackson play a precision bass with Herbie Hancock?

Jim Fielder?

I think Jim Fielder played a P bass with BST. He is a cool player with great time and he swings hard- he also plays upright.

If you want to be really snoooty, then it should be played on an upright only.

I'm not that snooty however.

My best advice for your question is to try and learn to squelch the desire to prove arrogant people wrong.

Ray Brown & Ron Carter used P basses.

...for that matter, pretty much anyone in the early daze of EB/Jazz. Bob Cranshaw?

I'm assuming Jamerson (& Chuck Rainey) used a P whenever EB was used on a Jazz gig.

Paul Jackson uses rounds... He says that specifically on BP TV, that flats don't have the bite that he likes ( or something to that effect). But this answers half of the OP's question though, Jazz (whatever type you call Headhunters) played on a P.

Dave Holland plays a P-style bass on this DVD-
http://www.amazon.com/Dejohnette-Han...9922480&sr=1-4

...probably not flats, though.

I was thinking about this thread on the way home...IIRC, every local Jazz guy back in the day (playing Jazz Standards & such) used a P-bass w/ flats.

I'm thinking your friend must be talking Fusion-style Jazz?
If so, how about Phil Chen on Blow By Blow?

Jamerson was a jazz guy, playing pop (although his lines are quite jazzy.) He played LaBella flats on a P.

I thought that was a J bass??
I'll have to look again but pretty sure it's a J

EDIT: Just checked the DVD out (I have it). It's a J style with a P pickup at the neck. I believe it's a Peavey or something, judging by the headstock. Either using flats or VERY old rounds. The slap sound is hard to distinguish

He might not use flats nowadays, but on headhunters it sounds very much like flats to my ears. I'm ok with being wrong tho at any rate, I can cop that sound a lot better with flats!

But on the original point of contention - I would say that the typical J-Bass sounds even less like an upright (the classic 'Jazz Bass'!) than a P-Bass does, if that's your measuring stick. But in the end - who cares. Play it well, and play it with soul, and if that ain't jazz enough, then phooey

I thought it was a P...and couldn't find my DVD to verify (too much crap loaned out!).
I checked youtube & it seemed every vid of that concert had Holland playing URB. Did see a cool version of the same band in Japan (outdoors) doing "Jack In"...Holland was playing a red J-style bass. When I saw that I said "Oops". I figured someone here would catch me on it.

On a tangent-
There are a couple of concerts of Jeff Beck's band right after Blow By Blow came out...with Bascomb on bass, Bernard Purdie on cans, Max Middleton on keys. Basically, it's Blow By Blow live.
