You should also check out Garaj Mahal. Most consider them a jam band but they're a really good funky fusion-type band. Great bass playing. And as always, Herbie Hancock.

Jazz you have a decent list. Funk...eh...so here's a few:

Billy Bass Nelson, Boogie Mosson and Bootsy Collins (Parliament/Funkadelic, Bootsy's Rubber Band although P-Funk stuff is far superior)

Larry Graham (Sly and the Family Stone, Graham Central Station)

Kool (Kool and the Gang early to mid-70's stuff, not the 80's stuff)

I can't remember the names of the bassists of these bands, but here's some cool funk bands to check out:

War
The Commodores
The Gap Band
Ohio Players
Isley Bros from the 70's

Few more Funk bands:

Brothers Johnson (Louis Johnson)
Lakeside (Marvin Craig)
Piece of a Dream (jazz/funk fusion - Gerald Veasley)
Stone City Band (Rick James)
D-Train (Hubert Eaves II)
The Time (Prince and Terry Lewis)

Bands that I can't think of the bassist:

Slave
ConFunkShun
Dazz Band
Brick
Cameo
Maze (jazz/funk fusion)

Along with the other posters, I think you have an excellent list to start from

(...think I gonna listen to some wax when I get home and do this )

Seems like everyone's got everything covered. Check out George Porter Jr. of The Meters.

Believe it or not , I didnt use google I have recoerdings of all these artists. I'm an old schooler. The first thing I'd check on an album is who was playing bass.

Someone already mentioned it, but if you haven't already listened to everything Jaco Pastorius has done, you should.
