Jazz & Fusion Solos "Collection"

I'd like to suggest you an idea: to upload (to rapidshare or to any other free hosting service) a couple of themes with a bass solo that you, for whatever reason, find interesting.

Here are the three "conditions", if you agree:

1. Only jazz, fusion or related styles.
2. It would be great if the tune is not too much known
3. You must quote the record where the tune originally appears.

If you find this one an interesting proposition, maybe we can build a great, collective, bass solo collection.

"My" tunes:

1. Banana Jam, Bassist: Mark Egan, Record: Airto Moreira - Killer Bees (1993)

This is not a "proper" solo; Egan limits himself to "slide" his fretless notes through the entire song, but his sound and his perfect tuning makes this beautiful theme really incredible.

2. New Begining, Bassist: John Benitez, Record: Seis del Solar - Alternate Roots (1995)
Besides his fantastic solo, Benitez offers us an incredible lesson on modern latin rhtythm bass. Be aware of the rhytmical "games" betwen the bass and the rest of the instruments in this tune from the regular band of Ruben Blades.

3. Un amor real, Bassist: Renaud Garcia Fons, Record: Jazzpaña II

I discovered this inmensely talented french double bassist in this duet with the spanish flamenco master Gerardo Núñez. He has strong oriental influences and has mastered the art of the armonics and microtuning on his instrument. In fact, sometimes is really difficult to believe that you're actually hearing a double bass. Privileged ears!

4. Iraida, Bassist: Oscar Cartaya, Record: Eddie Palmieri - Vortex (1996)
After the long solo del maestro Palmieri (and yes, he sings here too ), you'll hear a tremendous solo of this excelent bassist. Great sound, better taste.

5. Fly, Bassist: Jonathan Maron, Record: Groove Collective - We the People (1996)
This solo don't reflect, IMHO, the great musicianship of one of my favorite bassist of all times; You must hear him live, I'll never forget the incredibly soulful solo that he did on the "Festival de Jazz de Vitoria". On record, however, he contains himself, playing grooves with a great dosis of originality. That's, for me, the definition of good taste.

You can download the tunes here:

Peace!
