Jeff Beck is a legend. I wish I could play like him. I will though.....one day! Haha
So what does everybody think of him?
I heard a clip from his live cd that was recorded at Ronnie Scott's jazz club I can't wait to get my hands on that. It will be released on Nov. 25 I think.

I wish he'd leave the whammy bar alone a bit though as I prefered his style back in the early '80s on the There & Back album. One of the best gigs I ever saw was on that tour with Tony Hymas on keys, Si Phillips on drums and Mo Foster on bass. Mo was brilliant and broke a string mid gig. I now that a lot of fuss is made about Tal, who is good, but I think it's the novelty of her age and sex that's given her such a high profile IMO (sorry Tal). I guess it's time for the Ezbass bashing begin

EZbass, you bastage you! How can you say such a thing??
Seriously, though - I pretty much agree. It will be interesting to see her in five more years. Plus, you just gotta love the cute little bass face she makes at 2:39! |

My fav stuff from JB comes from the 70's though. The Rough and Ready and Jeff Beck Group albums. Those two and Wired could define a career for most guitarists... as it is most people know him from Blow By Blow.
In GP this month there is a run down on one of his touring rigs. The only pedal listed is a flanger... I've never heard a flange do Reverb & Echo that well...

Sure, her age and gender are going to get her more attention - same goes for Esperanza Spalding, who is another brilliant young female player - but let's not let that overshadow the talent. She plays with a maturity beyond her years IMHO, and like another poster said before, just wait about 5 years and see how good she is THEN.

out how to get a guitar buddy to do Blue Wind with me. I figure we
can do it in a threesome (bass, guitar, drums) without the keyboards
and throw in the "Train Kept a Rollin" riff as they do on the Live with
Jan Hammer album.
I've also been playing "Cause We've Ended As Lovers," "Come Dancing,"
"Train Kept a Rollin" and "Let Me Love You" (<- incredibly awesome tune).
I was excited with the addition of Tal. With the right people, Jeff
can really make things happen. |

| | | Still recall the Saturday I heard Blow By Blow for the first time...this was the 1st weekend it was available(1975). I was with the slightly older 'self-proclaimed Clapton down the street'. Eventually, he kicked us younger guys out...he needed to hear the album ALONE.
The album's 1st tune, "You Know What I Mean"...you mean the bass doesn't have to play on "1"?!? Phil Chen was the bomb!

I absolutely LOVE his first two LP's with Rod Stewart...unbelievable, like nothing else out there at the time-the interplay between vocal and guitar was amazing and still is. Truth and Beck-Ola. Truth is one of the all time great rock/blues records.

I'm right behind you, I have most of his catalog, Jeff Beck Group, Beck-Ola, Truth, BbB, Wired, There and Back, Flash, who Else, You Had it Coming, Yardbirds, Beck, Bogert and Appice, Beckology, etc... love it all. I remember blasting "Goin' down" in my 66 FuryIII and getting all kinds of nasty stares in HS. I was getting gas at the lake this past summer with 'Roy's Toy' turned up and some folks were rolling up their window at it. His version of 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" from Wired is just about my all time favorite instrumental guitar recording, remarkable precision, control, tone...wonderful. |

I loved the Motown-meets-R'n'R approach of that group, especially on Rough and Ready. Clive Chaman was very influenced by Jamerson -- he was a fine bass player.
I'm also big on the first JBG, with Rod Stewart and Ron Wood. Loved Woody's go-for-broke bass style.
As for those 70's instrumental records, I was glad they were successful, but meh.

| | | | I've had the good fortune to see him in concert. Once with Clapton and Paige he blew them both off the stage.( they traded solo's with Becky going last and both Paige and Claption just shook thier heads in awe) . Truely a genius , always pushing the envelope. |

Ronnie's tone is killer on that stuff. That's my favorite period for him, but I'll listen to even his wankiest whammy bar moments.
