Was never really a Jeff Beck fan either until she started playing with him.

Oh ... wait ... :P |

And small airplanes????? don't get it...

As good as he is (and he is good), and as much as it was his birthday gig, the other musicians didn't really get a chance to shine IMHO. No real bass solos for Tal, Vinnie was on killer form but overkilled on the double pedals, and poor Jason Rebello is an amazing keyboardist and doesn't get many solos. What's all that about?

I seen Beck in Boston in April. (great show)
Tai is killer.
Also seen Beck, back in 2006 with Pino Palladino on bass.
Jeff knows how to pick bass players. |

Tal's album "Transformation" is incredible as well.
She has the chops, but what really blows me away is her technique.
I was listening to a track on her album "Truth Be Told," and I thought it was fretless in the beginning. Her technique is that good.
She throws little subtle things in there while she plays. If you watch her left hand in any live video, you'll see that she throws in a lot of slides. Instead of hammering on, she'll slide into the note. Her vibrato is pretty beastly too. Thats how she gets her tone on "Serendipity," my favorite track.
Glad I'm not the only one who appreciates her musicianship.

I'm really interested in her technique, and specifically how she's able to do what she does with such small hands. Anyone have any thoughts or observations about that? |

| | DAcat | | Join Date: Jun 2005 Location: Iowa | | I've been playing bass since 66 and Ive always been a huge Jeff Beck admirer since I put on a Yardbirds Album and heard songs like "I Aint Done Wrong"or "I'm Not Talking" etc (see both at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrKyNBrJD7A ) . I don't know how many of you know the story of one of the reasons why Hendrix finally decided to go to England with Chas Chandler (ex-Animals Bassist and Hendrix's eventual manager) where the the Jimi Hendrix Experience enventually formed.... was that the reluctant Jimi asked Chandler if he would introduce him to Jeff Beck shortly after they got to England ....Chandler said that he would introduce him to the "Shy One" , and that sealed the deal for Hendrix -as the story goes(these are from the Hendrix biographies). Beck by then had already been incorperating Indian influences in his guitar playing, experimenting with long guitar jams with the Yardbirds with high volume effects such as feedback, distortion, string-bending, incorperating the his own unique whammy bar techniques, and and he had become quite proficient on the bottle neck slide guitar as well as, in developing his own syle of guitar licks and playing styles which was not easily copied, unlike most of the guitarists of the day...which is still true...I hear a lot of music and from my experience, you'll seldom hear a band/guitarist play a Jeff Beck song thats been recorded in the the past ten years(I've heard none) as they are just technically too hard to pull off for guitarists/bands). Getting back to the Ronie Scott DVD, actually, the excellent DVD, although close to what one of his live shows is like ...its not a live show...its a collection of songs taken from 5 nights of playing live at Ronnie Scotts- out of order. If you get the Blu Ray version(which I highly recommend) and listen to the Beck interview, you'll see that that he was quite nervous about the recording of this DVD- his very first live performance being recorded ....I think this explains why the playing by him was much more conservative than you usually see in live shows. In regards to his generousity, and the 5-6 tours before, and he's one of the most humble and generous guitarists I've seen... I saw his last tour last month and not only was Tal given a chance to solo...but 3 times in one night(when was the last time you heard 3 bass solos in one night unless the concert was by a bassist) ...also solos by Robello as well as several duels and duets with Jeff , and a solo by Vinnie C. who was actually leading the band with his awesome chops and fills -he was almost in solo mode all night long-never missing a beat-easily one of the best drummers on the planet ...IMHO very generous by Beck.... and and he was openly demonstrative of their excellent playing on virtually every song. with enthusiastic hand gestures..and when he liked something special anyone had just played-if he could- he'd look at them and give them his special smile of appreciation. If you are a musician and you get a chance to see this band, don't pass it up -legendary musicians don't come along very often,, legendary bands-less often....they are way better live than on the DVD...touring Canada, Europe and Montreux Jazz Fest still this summer...Peace....
