Jeff Beck and Tal... together

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got back from the Jeff Beck show at the Montreal Jazz Festival. In a word: Awesome.

For Tal's solo, she called Jeff over and they tore the house down on Feeway Jam... both playing on Tal's bass!

Check it out!

I'll be sure to check for those later, but if anyone wants to save me some time, I'd love to come back later to spoon-fed links.

I gotta say something I wasn't gonna say... Since there is this great love-fest for Ms. Tal on this list...

I recently bought "Jeff Beck Live at Ronny Scotts" - a 2008 CD featuring him and Tal...

The bass playing ranged from adequate to just plain bad. I was *very* disappointed in her tone, her articulation, and her overall playing. Fret buzz? Missed notes? Muddy flurries of midrange notes? She sounded like a JV student at a varsity recital to me.

I've seen her live, now I've got her on CD - and I have to say she wouldn't have even got a foot in the door if she wasn't so easy on the eye... And I *really* wanted to like her - hell, she *is* awfully cute - but good is good and mediocre is... well...

I got the DVD, and I really enjoyed it. Then I got the CD, and I was very dissapointed in the tone of the bass, can't hear it very good at all. You should check out the DVD, the tone of the bass is way better on it (disclaimer: I've only watched the DVD in stereo, as I don't have a surround system, but it sounded great IMO).

Oh....you're one of THOSE guys.

We're all entitled to our opinions. I'm not knocking yours at all, but I AM curious. I've seen Tal play a few times now.(Backing Wayne Krantz, doing her solo stuff, and also with Jeff and Vinnie) I've got her solo CD, Crossroads, and the Ronnie Scotts DVD and I don't know WHAT your talking about. lol

Are we talking about the same recording here because (to my ears) she sounded great on the Ronnie Scotts DVD. In fact each time I've seen her she is better than the last.

There's my .02

To the OP Yango-
If you check out the older JB videos You could see their progression of their dual solo. It's pretty cool. The first solos are short and pretty sloppy. Then you see the ones they're doing now. They've nearly perfected it now.

I am also not that impressed. She is a decent player. Given time and good mentoring she has the potential to develop into a very good player. She is not blazing new trails with bass playing and I do not yet see evidence she will do that. But she can potentially be a very good player.

Her looks and size have to be helping her get into the door and I hope she can take advantage of the opportunties given to her. Her playing is too choopy for my taste, they are not very musical. Hopefully she can grow into a musician (thinking about bass players such as Jeff Berlin, John Patitucci, Jack Bruce, etc).

I think it is a pretty safe bet that 98% of the Tal critics here aren't half the player she is already at 24.

A friend of mine's father said about motorcycles, "If you win races you're automatically pretty." She's winning races, or at least getting great, real musician gigs. If it were an Abba reunion (though I like them too) maybe the looks would count more than the playing, but jeez guys. Jeff Beck, Wayne Krantz, Chick Corea? How much average talent eye candy have they hired up to now?

I was fully prepared to not like this kid, as I generally do not like the Sadowsky hi-fi sound. I had also seen some You tube footage that left me less than impressed. However, upon seeing the Live at Ronnie Scott's video I am singing a different tune. This kid is in the pocket, does not commit the cardinal sin of playing too many notes, and has a nice, full warm sound. The forays into reggae were particularly tasty. I think its wonderful that a non-flashy player is getting some well-deserved recognition. After playing for more than twenty years i feel that I could probably bass-tech for her.

Agreed.

Plus, I'll go with Chick and Jeff's ear for talent. They both have pretty great track records.

Yeah.......What the heck are all those other world class players thinking about? What do they know about music?.........Of all the players they have to choose from they had to settle on her. I'm sure they are willing to put their reputations on mediocre players. Maybe Tal should just move to San Diego and see if she could get a gig. Really dude..........tell me you're kidding.
